Men's Ice Hockey Tournament at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022

Recommended Posts

According to reports, we should get a formal announcement within the next 24 hours.  No real surprise.  The NHL owners are likely more than happy to use COVID as an excuse to not send players to Beijing since they'll want to use the February break to make up games

In other hand suddenly :CHN chances for a VERY interesting result increased a lot

Still do not see them making the quarterfinals but should very well surprise some opponents

I am not so sure. Omricom is spreading badly. Looks at the chaos at the short course world swimming to see how bad it could get.

Well on the bright side, at least I now have a 2 hour break to sleep each day during the time where there's usually only a single hockey game happening. :d

Totally agree. It is very interesting that they decided immediately on their peak of Covid and did not wait till 10th January...

Makes it an easier sell that they just extended the holiday pause to say now they can't send players to Beijing.  Why wait if the decision has already been made?

You should be sure.  Tokyo was held during a surge in the pandemic and they completed every event.  What chaos at the short course worlds?  Yes, a number of athletes couldn't compete.  Yet, every event was held.  If that's "how bad it could get," then the Olympics should be a lot easier with all the safety protocols they're likely to have in place.

Please stop fear-mongering.  We all know COVID is a serious issue, but it's not going to get the IOC or China to say "you know what, let's postpone the Olympics, we can't have them now"

Strong words (in Swedish) from :SWE Bäckström, calling the NHL's withdrawal from the Olympics "a joke".  https://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/hockey/a/9KGGkq/nhl-svenskarna-om-os-beskedet-ett-skamt

Will be interested to see what players say in public.

Apparently AHL players will be eligible for the Olympics. so probably a couple of overseas players will be in our Beijing roster then, we have a few players there.

but not entirely convinced if they are better than the european clubs based roster :p

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)
