Men's Ice Hockey Tournament at the Winter Olympic Games 2018

Recommended Posts

This is obviously a disapointing performance from Germany. Belarus was able to beat Sweden in regulation, Germany was so weak they required overtime. Sweden is a really easy opponent to play in the quarterfinals when they win their group so really the game should have been a walkover. The fact the game went to overtime is really emblematic of how terrible German sthletes have been during these Olympics.

More seriously, what is up with Sweden at the Olympics? They won their group in 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018 (first seed iverall after the group phase in every one of those years except 2010 where they where the second seed). It’s strange how Swedish teams seem to gell really quickly then fall apart later.

Bold prediction: Canada is going to get at least a silver medal in men’s hockey.

Sweden comes prepared while the other teams play catch-up. Also doing well early on may make the players a bit arrogant.

That 2010.......thanks for the small reminder

Sweden clearly has some troubles with underestimating opponents from non top 6 hockey countries at the Olympics. The biggest shock however may still be the Belarussian one from Salt Lake

I'm still shocked by the German win over Sweden...

however, it's clear that Swedish players and staff underestimated GER and did play like they were sure to win the game in any moment, even when they were down 3-1 with 10 minutes or so yet to play...

moreover, their goaltending once again has been really questionable...

but I still think that their loss to Belarus in 2002 was definitely a bigger surprise than yesterday's...

about the other quarterfinals...

RUS, as expected, destroyed Norway, who clearly were already mentally gone before the start and after they got their best result in many years...

CAN vs FIN...meh..I expected a lot more from this game, but it was a really boring one, with CAN playing solid defense and FIN unable to create any significant scoring chance, not even late in the 3rd period when they were already down 1-0...

poor show, but with the most deserved winners, imho...

CZE vs USA...another quite disappointing game if we only look at the level of play...

the US guys scored first, but they couldn't mantain the lead for very long, despite the Czechs didn't put so much pressure and speed in their game...

and after the Europeans took the lead in the second period, the American answer was quite immediate...

after that, the pace slowed down even more and it became a very tactical game, played as much as the Czechs like the most...their tactical defence slowly forced the OT, where nothing exciting happened...

then it was the Czech goalie to steal the show in the penalty shootout, saving all the 5 US shots and sending his team to the last 4...

now I hope that at least the classic rivalry between the Czechs and the Russians in their semfinal clash would finally put some salt and pepper on this tournament, so far very disappointing by the side of neutral fans...

First ever Coach challenge :d  too bad you can challenge only 2 things and the Czechs needed now something totally else

    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
    • Also, I just logged back into my account, where it sent me to update my profile, and when I saved that, I got a screen that included a check mark next to 'Registered for the Draw'.  Not sure I totally trust it, but it does at least say so.  (There's nothing specifically referencing Drop 2 or anything...might just be a stock screen.). I'm curious what it would look like if you looked at it @esube.  https://tickets.la28.org/
    • I didn't buy any tickets, but didn't get the e-mail.   We bought tickets on my wife's account (earlier timeslot), but not 12, and she got the e-mail.

    • I am very curious.  We got extremely lucky in the first ticket drop, both my and my wife's emails were selected for relatively early time slots-- early enough that we bought our full allotment of tickets for good stuff.  Not swimming or gymnastics of course, but we were really pleased,  d   But today I received an email on one of those accounts saying that we were entered into the second drop because we hadn't used up our 12 ticket allotment.  I went back and counted-- twice-- and yes, we certainly did purchase 12 tickets on that account.      I am not sure I want any more!  Did this happen to anybody else?
