The fact we are going to see more of these teams when the World Cup expands in 2026 to 48 teams is really not looking very appealing.

Well, there will always be people complaining about not enough goals or too many goals.

 

There are probably 64 teams better than Panama right now, we need to see who will qualify for 2026 first. The only complaint I have is Asia getting too many spots, unless the goal is getting China to qualify as a new market.

Poor Panama...

I'll write it again: we need a new system. My suggestion is:

Europe: 14 quotas
North America: 2 quotas
South America: 4 quotas
Africa: 4 quotas
Asia: 4 quotas
Oceania: 1 quota
Host nation: 1 quota

World Cup qualifying tournament (a kind of test event): 2 quotas (2 teams from Europe, 2 from South America, 1 from North America, 1 from Asia, 1 from Africa, 1 from Oceania)

Belgium and England have the top goalscorers so far.

 

I kinda reminds me of the 2013 Confederations Cup when Fernando Torres was the top goalscorer thanks to his 4 goals in the Spain 10-0 win against Tahiti.

48 teams will be a huge mess, so many walking bye teams. But at least New Zealand and Serbia would have almost secured spots so...

In theory this could work but it doesn't matter. In 2026 we will have 48 teams and most definitely see more results like this one today.

Indeed. Losing to an already eliminated Trinidad at the last match was beyond any defense.
