Lappage was against the 2014 world champion and 2015 bronze medallist, Gallays against the 2014 bronze medallist

Not to sound too pessimistic, but while Canada may end up at around the same medals as 2012 our diversity has dropped. Yes it is nice (and important) that we are winning medals in swimming and athletics, but it isn't worth it if our other sports drop in quality (though to be fair sports like rowing were already dying before swimming and athletics rose)

Wrestling has the worst draws of any sport, its completely random, and all of our girls had to face medallists 1st or 2nd round, it was unrealistic to expect them to repeat the 2 medals of 2012 with that luck. Judo is also very random, and our only good weightlifter retired. The only disappointment in my eyes has been Diving

I think they'll easily surpass 2012 level, as they already have with golds.  Canada won medals in 11 different disciplines in 2012, and 7 so far in Rio with good shots at soccer, golf, canoe/kayak and wrestling.  

 

While I appreciate diversity, Canada rarely has athletes capable of multiple medals (in both summer and winter games), and rarely do well in events that offer lots of medals (i.e. swimming and athletics in summer; skiing events in the winter).  So the rise in swimming and athletics, with stars like Oleksiak and De Grasse, is very welcome.

Warner was okay in discus.  He'll likely hold onto 2nd.  He's pretty weak in pole vault though coming up so we'll see what happens there.
