Russian version of the Commonwealth Games are happening in Belarus. They actually began in 2021, but obviously have taken on a very different role now. This is first of a few planned “alternative” multi-sports games that will feature Belarus and Russian in a full, official capacity. I believe a counter-Universiade is scheduled for next month.

To be honest, I don’t give a flying fuck about these. I figured it might be worth posting, so there can be a discussion.

The only thing that occurs to me, apart from the who's who of dreadful totalitarian regimes that have been invited, is the sheer hypocrisy of hearing from Russia about 'depoliticising' sport - and then they run with this crap. A slap in the face to Bach, who frankly deserves it. So can we just put that canard about non-politicised sport away now once and for all?

Increasingly I find myself questioning the value of 'extreme' globalisation on the sports front. Doesn't seem to me the Olympics is increasing world peace, or bringing peoples together - quite the opposite. I wonder if the 'West' which Russia clearly hates so much might just be better off accepting that hate, and cutting ties with it permanently, giving up on that globalisation and begin organising around states and provinces that share some basic ideals of decency. Perhaps we need to revive the Goodwill Games, but for nations with actual good will - perhaps the Commies and the Jeux de Francophonie can be folded into a new design that doesn't dance to the tune of oligarchs, dictators and despots.

36 countries have entered athletes into Russia’s abridged (and unaffiliated) University Games. They’ve basically left their plans for the 2023 FISU Summer University Games in place, but turned it to a competition for BRICS, SCO, and CIS nations.

:MDA:RSA the notable absences amongst those political organizations.

:RSO will also compete as a separate nation, so I’m sure that won’t cause any controversy :p

Why Moldavia should be a surprise? It's a solid filo-NATO county.

Yeah, the last elections shook stuff up.

It’s notable since they are still a member of CIS. They are the only member besides Ukraine that hasn’t attended the CIS Games or University Sports Festival in Russia.

Its unfortunate many BRICS and SCO members haven’t followed their lead on this.

There are literally 5 members in BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. South Africa is not participating. So, instead of using BRICS, it would be better if we are honest and say "Why are Brazil, India and China participating?" Also, it would help us in asking the same question to other countries participating like Argentina, Mexico, Thailand and NATO member Turkey.

But once we do that, we might realize that participation in these games mean nothing. Majority of the nations don't even care for the official Univerity Games, let alone Russian version of University games. Russian authorities would have approached some Universities from these countries and invited them. These universities sees it as a good opportunity to brag that their athletes represented the nations and won medals at an international event. Russia gets to brag that they got so much participation. And media gets to scare monger NATO vs BRICS/SCO like Allies vs Axis. And I find it really hilarious because except some China shrills, BRICS is considered a dead option in India. Majority of security establishment considers China as an enemy and Quad as future. And regarding Indian pariticpation in SCO, the running joke is that just as Pak was in SAARC to ensure nothing gets done there, India is in SCO to ensure nothing gets done.

Any streaming for the event? If someday I feel bored with nothing to watch I might just watch some action

    • Unfortunate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to Thursday evening, when the team captain's meeting is over and we have our very first World Cup start list of the season. Always a cool moment to see who's there and everything
    • Today I unpacked some of the boxes in which we have put my way too many books to move to our house, and I came across these beauty's I hadn't seen for a while     Absolutely recommended, tough to get for a decent price, but they are such an interesting read with lots of very interesting little stories! Still looking for at least 1900, 1904 and 1906, but not really in the right moment to spend money on that now, so the wait goes on
    • Which I guess is part of why unfortunately 'our' first wild card attempt of the season was rejected last week
    • The next chapter in the Krasnobaeva saga is upon us.   Looks like  Armenia have cut ties with her after only a few weeks. A person from their Federation has said, that they won't continue the relationship, because of her unprofessional and rude attitude towards the coaches and other officials. That includes: - having no respect to the coaches and their advise; - training without any motivation; - stops doing the routine and throws objects without any reason; - just lays on the floor and ignores the music.   When this was escalated with her mother, she mentioned that "Elvira has a strong temper and she was the same in Bulgaria and they tolerated her". Which of course is complete BS. If anyone attempted this shit here, they would be thrown out immediately.   And now  are wanting from her mother to return all finances they gave them, which she is refusing, so they will probably sue them. They will also inform other RG Federations about this situation, so they don't hire them.   My 2 cents on this is most likely Krasnobaeva was happy in BG and was forced out by her mother, so now she is sabotaging the move and be done with it.
    • Honestly Ruka is my favourite World Cup event of the whole season. Everybody is there. Later on there is always someone who skips one weekend or another . Not everybody takes part in Tour de ski. But here everyone shows up.
