Interesting no one ever mentions Padel. If the sport continues to grow as it has for the last decade, it will have very serious arguments for its inclusion (it's already going to feature at the European and Asian Games).

IMO, if there is to be a new racket sport at the olympics one day, this will be it.

Is that the one where Spain and Argentina fills up roughly 95% of the top-60 in the world rankings? Since this year Dutch Ziggo Sport is, for reasons nobody understands, showing the Padel World Tour, and I remember taking a look at the ranking: three Brazilian men, one Chilean man, a French woman and a few Portuguese women and the rest of the 120 top-60 players (men/women) were either Spanish or Argentinian. Has that been significantly changing this year?

Serious question/remark, since I really don't follow it, and maybe I'm talking about the wrong racket sport entirely :d

1)      Ultra controversial here: get rid of the medal table! Just do not sum medals from different sports, which are incomparable for sake of some nationalistic pride. 23 swimmers could win shit tone of medals for the table, while 23 footballer just one. Also if a country just focuses on maximising their medal output, could just invest in few sports, which are giving a lot of medals/discipline/athletes. Also state base doping system are resulting from the ambitions of being top on the medal table.

Also the medal table is just reducing all the athletes, all their live and all the way to the Games and all the competition to just some number in the table. I hear a lot something like “How many medals we (<- our country) won? And why so little?” They don’t ask who get the medal, in which sport, how was the competition, what is their story, was it disappointment, was it lucky shot, was it fair. No they want to hear the single number. They don’t care about sport, about competition, about athletes.

Also if we get rid of the medal table, we will have less discussion about this discipline needs more event, these have too much etc. Because the importance of the sport will less dependent on the number of medals you could get

This does not at all seem controversial, but incredibly well focused on the main things: the sports and the athletes.

Too bad the 'general public' will be against this, because they don't usually watch for the sports and the athletes, but to cheer for athletes they have never heard of or who might even be known as people who do shitty stuff (cheating, agression, etc), but who happen to have the same nationality in their passport as them.

The fans of sports and athletes - who would likely be in favour of more focus on sports and athletes, and smaller focus on the numbers behind a flag - are a large minority, sadly :p

No, you don't :p Yeah, Spaniards and Argentinians make up for the vast majority of the top athletes in the world, but this will change as time goes on and people from other countries will have played this sport from a young age.

The thing is that this sport seems to take off like crazy everywhere it is introduced. AFAIK, we have not seen anything like that before in modern times.

I really hope it's only a momentarily hype and it gets where it stands (at the very bottom of any list) as soon as possible...:redcard:

by the way, also here in Italy it has gained a lot of attention by the media, with sky Italia showing hours and hours a week of that and even some newspaper giving it more space than our Olympic Gold medallists in many sports... :hairpull:

I tried watching it recently and nearly got bored to death, but I guess I'm either not informed enough or picked the wrong few matches :p

No idea about padel in the Netherlands by the way, I think and hope it mostly stays with tennis here.

I kinda both agree and disagree. It is kinda noticable if a 'small' country performs well because of a one-off. It is something that is well-recognized internationally, and I always feel smaller underdog nations will always be hyped a bit by all of the media. (Although western countries, especially America, seem to be forever hyped here.. especially in swimming)

On the topic of random American swimmers who perform well at the 200 backstroke, this would probably be a good thing. Although the 200 backstroke is quite a forgettable event in itself. But they always feel like persons-who-I-rarely-know-except-for-having-this-American-flag.

Recognized inside the small part of the sports community that is so into these things as we are here, but Zambia winning a medal in boxing or something is definitely not going to make any headlines around the world in non-specialized media - with luck it'll be mentioned somewhere in the final lines of some small article :p

I do get that though, and for small nations it can be quite literally the only time they're ever even mentioned outside of their own country. I mean, if it weren't for Kirani James, I don't think I would ever have heard Grenada be mentioned in any way on TV or in a newspaper.
