Equestrian FEI Eventing Nations Cup 2019

Recommended Posts

Belgians have secured Top 3 after cross-country! By far their best cross-country performance in years, and right when they really needed it.

Switzerland can still defend their qualification though. Netherlands are out.

Standings after Cross-country...

:GER 78.10

:AUS 114.30

:BEL 117.50

:JPN 120.20

:SUI 125.90

:NZL 128.40

:GBR 138.20

:FRA 292.50

:USA 292.90

:SWE 340.40

:NED 342.40

:IRL 503.60

Virtual Olympic qualification rankings...

:SUI 380 (ahead on tie-break)

:BEL 380

:NED 355 (out)

So despite incredible 3rd place overnight, Belgians still miss out on tie-break. Granted, Swiss had the second best overall team cross-country round today.

In any case, another equestrian qualification nail-biter is coming up tomorrow.

Andrew Nicholson shared an interesting point of view regarding the new Olympic team format.

"This way is going to make it very exciting. You’ve got to try to get three clear rounds – they don’t have to go flat out. I think it’ll be very difficult for some riders to take team orders, and I think it’ll be difficult for team managers, but I can see it looking very exciting. It puts a lot of pressure on the riders. I’ve thought for years that it’s odd that riders at the Olympics win medals for doing a bad job, sometimes – I’ve done it myself, but you don’t see any of the other sports do that. In a relay race, if you drop the baton, you’re out – so making all three scores count is more the way sport is in the Olympic Games. Everyone has to do their best.”

Looks like there is only a single substitution overnight. Karim Laghouag had a horse fall yesterday, so Nicolas Touzaint will step in as a mandatory substitution.

Meanwhile, :BEL vs :SUI battle will continue with show jumping today. Switzerland very much has an upper hand though, for two reasons. First, they are already guaranteed to win any tie-break scenario over Belgium. Second, it's pretty much impossible for them to drop below 7th place.

There are three options for the Belgians:

  • If they stay 3rd, then they would need Switzerland to drop to 6th or lower.
  • If they move up to 2nd, then they would need Switzerland to stay 5th or lower.
  • If they drop to 4th, then it's game over as Switzerland should finish no lower than 7th.

I can see Switzerland losing a place or two. But then again, Belgians are by no means safe in their position.

In any case, complete jumping round will be streamed here. First session is at 11 a.m., while the second one (including team rotations) starts at 2 p.m. local time...

    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
