Poursheib just beat the host Karateka in his opening match, next match will be interesting against USA, but that American guy Kamran Madani is actually Iranian :d

considering the Olympic qualification, Poursheib is in the same weight as Ganjzadeh , so I care less about Olympics qualification for him. for him only winning a world medal matters.

but there is an Israeli guy not far from Poursheib. hope someone takes care of him soon.

That sportdata website is so ridiculously slow

An athlete's profile like this takes forever to load (and it's not even a good one, it doesn't even show their birth date for example  )

http://setopen.sportdata.org/wkfranking/ranking_main_competitor.php?ranking_country=COL&ranking_competitor=&ranking_competitor_name=SINISTERRA SINISTERRA CARLOS ALBERTO

actually it was Chobotar (UKR) who took care of Poorshab...

but as he went on winning and he's through to the Gold Medal match, Poorshab will have a chance to win a consolation Bronze...

Great, day 1, all 6 Dutch athletes out basically immediately, including Tyron Lardy, ranked 6th in the world and Timothy Petersen, who won European bronze last year and now lost against a Colombian who's 300th or something :p (although to be fair, Petersen injured his foot last month and only barely made the world champs)

and the disaster for Italy is now complete...also Silvia Semeraro (women's -68kg) is out in an early round after losing to an unknown Norwegian...:wall:

in just an afternoon we probably have already compromised our chances to qualify an athelte to both the heavyweight classes in Tokyo...these championships are already highly disappointing, even if tomorrow we put 4 people in the gold medal matches (which won't happen, in any case)...

when it really matters, Italy fail...that's obvious...:(

that's Karate...actually, that's Kumite...on a given day, anything can happen...

p.s. rankings are not so important, as many Countries don't take part in most of the tournaments throughout the season and show up only at the global events...

so at the end of the day, Ganjzadeh in the final against Germany and Poursheib will fight for bronze vs Kazakhstan. I was expecting more but this is kumite, nothing is guaranteed. I hope both can repeat their 2016 medals (gold for Ganjz and bronze for Poursheib)

but what a disastrous day for Iranian girls. both lost in the 1st round. :zip: Zangeneh lost to Cuba !
