Promising start for Germany, only the 2nd time in the history of junior worlds (after 1988) that Germany won a medal in both downhill races. Especially promising since Aicher on the women's side will be able to compete 2 more years at junior worlds while Vogt on the men's side will be able to compete one more year at junior worlds.

Other german women since 2000 who won a downhill medal at junior worlds: Maria Höfl-Riesch, Viktoria Rebensburg, Kira Weidle (all of them went on to make downhill world cup podiums)

Zrinka Ljutić is the slalom champion. :cheer:

She is now invited for the WC finals, which is awesome.

This is very curious, Polish ES commentator Marcin Szafranski was raving about Ljutic during the WOG and said he thinks this girl can become a real superstar and I said to myself are we having another Ana Jelusic hype talk here but maybe he was a little right about her? :p

Yeah, she was more convincing last season actually, when racing mostly the Europe Cup.

This title surprised me given her WC season this year.

Bronze for Zrinka in the GS. :yes

Pretty great conclusion to an otherwise poor season. She didn't turn any heads in Beijing, and everything before that was even less impressive (compared to the previous season). Guess she peaked at the right time.

This was an amazing for Germany:

- 4th best nation overall (behind Austria, Italy and Switzerland)

- No nation had more different (individual) medalists

- Most individual medals since 1994

- First time since 1994 that two different men won individual medals

- Emma Aicher became the first woman since 1995 that won medals in both the downhill and slalom

On the men's side Steen Olsen and Franzoni (both born 2001) were the clear standouts, Ax Swartz (born 2004) was also super impressive. On the women's side Aicher (born 2003) was the biggest star, followed by Egger (born 2001) and Ljutic (born 2004). France, Slovenia and to some degree Norway (great men's team, but only one individual medalist and not too convincing on the women's side) were rather disappointing in my opinion.

    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
