Russia-Ukraine Crisis Consequences in Sports

This all but assures Russia cannot qualify directly through the WR for the 2026 Olympics correct?

Depends on when they will be allowed to compete again. If they can start right off in Division 1 and be promoted in 2023 then they should be fine.

It has now been confirmed by FIFA. All Russian national and clubs teams have been suspended until further notice.

Well, I already wrote it a couple of days ago in the MIlano-Cortina Thread

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From usually well infromed sources the different national hockey federations were already informed about the Men tournament qualification format for Milano/Cortina 2026.

Same format will be played as the Vancouver, Sochi, PyeongChang and Beijing tournaments.

12 teams tournament, 8 qualified directly via IIHF ranking after next year 2023 World Championships, 1 automatical host quota for Bella Italia and 3 will advance from 4 rounds qualification Tournaments, with 9th, 10th and 11th ranked IIHF 2023 country hosting the final qualification tournaments.

The final IIHF world ranking will be counted the usual way:

Last 4 WChs and last Olympic Tournament will be counted,

  • with the 2023 WCh having 100% counts, 2022 WCh 75%, WCh 2021 50% and WCh 2020 (since was not played due pandemic the 2019 will be used instead) 25%
  • and The last Olympics have 100% counting value.

So basically the qualifying ranking right now for Milano looks so

Rank NOC WCh 2023 WCh 2022 WOG 2022 WCh 2021 WCh 2020(19) Total
1. :FIN     1200 1160 1120 1760
2. :RUS     1160 1060 1160 1690
3. :CAN     1040 1200 1200 1680
4. :USA     1060 1120 1040 1615
5. :SVK     1120 1000 960 1580
6. :SWE     1100 960 1100 1580
7. :SUI     1000 1040 1000 1520
8. :GER     940 1100 1020 1510

9. :CZE     960 1020 1060 1495
10. :DEN     1020 900 900 1440
11. :LAT     920 920 940 1385

12. :NOR     880 880 920 1330

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this the amount of points nations win via WCH

1. 1200 9. 960 17. 800 25. 640 33. 480 41. 320
2. 1160 10. 940 18. 780 26. 620 34. 460 42. 300
3. 1120 11. 920 19. 760 27. 600 35. 440 43. 280
4. 1100 12. 900 20. 740 28. 580 36. 420 44. 260
5. 1060 13. 880 21. 720 29. 560 37. 400 45. 240
6. 1040 14. 860 22. 700 30. 540 38. 380 46. 220
7. 1020 15. 840 23. 680 31. 520 39. 360 47. 200
8. 1000 16. 820 24. 660 32. 500 40. 340 48. 180

so if they not allowed to play in Dvision I A this year (which they will not) it means at max 720 for 21st place (will be counted 75%)

and next year (assuming they will be relegated again) and they win the Division I B it is 680 points for 23rd place (100% counted) that would be really bad for them but again we muxt count the 1160 points from Beijing which can at the end save them

Statement from :UKR Elina Svitolina who has pulled out of WTA tournament in Monterrey.

As she is only demanding they be neutrals rather than a ban I can’t see the ITF refusing to implement her demands.

The Olympics will account for 100% of the value this time? I thought it would be 75%?

Regardless assuming your scenario happens, Russia will have 2910 points which going by the 2022 Olympics, would put them on the outside.

Nice message from Pavlyuchenkova. Tennis players are mostly independent athletes, besides Davis Cup/BJKC/ATP Cup/Olympics, it is kinda the same if they play as neutrals.

I'm not sure if this has been reported here, but FIG has taken action:

Not sure if this ban is for the time being or if it affects events in the future; however, it seems likely that the rhythmic gymnastics World Challenge Cups in Russia and Belarus will not take place.

I will be  surprised if the Russian and Belarusian teams are allowed into the Uk for the worlds in Liverpool later this year as things stand.
