IIHF - Update on Russia & Belarus

Russian and Belarusian teams will not be reincorporated for the next 2023/2024 season.

Today at its regularly scheduled meeting, the IIHF Council reviewed the current safety risks associated with reincorporating the Russian and the Belarusian National and Club Teams into IIHF Competitions.

Based on a detailed risk assessment from a renowned company that specializes in assessing risks due to various global challenges, the IIHF Council determined that it is not yet safe to reincorporate the Russian and Belarusian Teams back into IIHF Competitions, and that it will not be safe for the upcoming 2023/2024 IIHF Championship season. Therefore, the IIHF will move forward with the 2023/2024 IIHF Championship season without the Russian and Belarusian Teams.

The endless soap opera about Slovak KHLers in the National Team finally ended today as exected, No KHLers in :SVK NT.

The Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH) has made a final decision regarding the participation of players from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in the national team and their participation in the World Championships.

Regarding their participation or non-participation in the world championship, there was only speculation for a long time. The SZĽH decided last year that it would not ban them and that their nomination would be up to the national team Coaching Staff, which eventually did not to call hockey players from the KHL to the team in the previous Preparation Tournaments this season.

"In recent weeks, we had a long debate with the players from the KHL. They have always gladly and proudly represented our country. They have the performance to be able to fight for participation in the final nomination for the World Champs. During the debates, we came to the unanimous opinion that for the sake of the calm course of preparation and one hundred percent concentration of our team on the World Champs, it will be better if we omit players from the KHL from participating in the championship this season," said representative assistant and scout Peter Frühauf in the press conference today.

Slovakia has thus joined  Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, Latvia and France which will not call hockey players playing in Russia to their National teams at the upcoming World Champs in :FIN &. :LAT .

AELTC gave in and lifted the Wimbledon ban on Russians & Belarussians. They had no choice after nobody supported them in the tennis world (especially none of the other Grand Slams). The fact Russian-born Elena Rybakina won Wimbledon last year only made the whole decision look even more stupid. Kate Middleton still had to shake hands with a Russian DNA and the winner's trophy currently sits in Moscow in Rybakina's parents' house.

This doesn’t seem wise.

The Ukrainian government has barred its national sports teams from competing at international events which also include athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus.

It’s a risky strategy. It relies on the pressure of their absence causing federations and countries then ban Russians and Belarusians. Could well work.
