Russia-Ukraine Crisis Consequences in Sports

The head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, said that the issue of ensuring the safety of Russian athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is critically important, which was also noted by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its comments always says that the issue of security is critical in this situation. The same was discussed at the board of the Ministry of Sports. Neither the national federation, nor government services, nor the national Olympic committee, which is cut off from the process by these recommendations, will deal with this,” TASS quotes Pozdnyakov as saying.

This sounds a lot like what the USSR said before the 1984 Games. Using athlete safety concerns to justify pulling out of the Games

Unlike 1984, they don't have as much influence on other nations to follow suit.

Interesting. This is where the French organising committee can play its cards. If they are keen to make IOC President smile they make noises about meeting the Russians and extra security if required. If they prefer the Russkis don't come, they make indignant noises about existing security being entirely adequate and the Russian noises insulting and inappropriate.

If they want to really rile the Russians, they pronounce their security entirely adequate, while noting that there are limits as regards what any state can provide when met with the sort of organised international mendacity we saw in, for example, Salisbury.

I wonder if some of our Romanian users could write a bit about circumstances of that ROU decision. My bet is Causeascu thoght that in those difficult time for Romanian people (the 80's) sports success may make some support for him and improve the mood in the nation. But i don't know Romania, never been there, that's my thoughts only, my guesses.

For anybody who can read Russian or, more probably, uses Google Translate - there's a good explanation on what Russia thinks of Olympic qualification chances here

So, basically outside combat sports they will not qualify in any other sport, I think.

    • Sorry but this is the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard… putting in 3x3 hockey (which doesn’t even have its own World Championships or anything like that) over telemark skiing, ice cross, and freeride skiing…    This is coming from a big fan of hockey. Curious as to what @hckošice @phelps @Epic Failure @copravolley@Topicmaster1010 think though?
    • Dawn McEwen will be unretiring temporarily (first time since Beijing 2022), as she’ll be stepping in for Shannon Birchard at the GSOC HearingLife Tour Challenge!
    • The sister of Angelina Topić, Sofija Topić, is already beating her youth records.  Sofija (11) jumped 140cm which is better Angelina's 138cm at that age.
    • I hope there is some diversity in teams across both disciplines.   I wonder how they will get the 240 quotas. Losing Nordic Combined + Ski mountaineering is only 72 quotas.
    • Last Call For Entries!!   If anyone still wants to enter, this is your last chance to do so. Since I now won't be able to use tomorrow as a voting day I have dedcied to give people an extra 24 hours from this point to enter. The public jury vote will still open at the advertised time. Below I have tagged user from countries that have yet to enter, hopefully they will consider to do so at the last opportunity:   South Korea: @erw@jgb0062 Croatia: @Nikica@snk911@VISOKO Gabon: @Damienyork Belgium: @ALABRAMMIE@Misterxxt Latvia: @Blueniceguy Dominican Republic: @eduardo096 Singapore: @bennetcraig39 Egypt: @mahmoud elrefaei @thepharoah Qatar: @amrgunenr1@KAE Australia: @Sir Rols@Stu192 @dullard Philippines: @JohnRamos84 @PHI2019 @Tigercub Iran: @Hesamkh1990 @MHSN Estonia: @Katie_M Bangladesh: @Razu Ahmed  Montenegro: @ChandlerMne Hong Kong: @pacowong1223    Also @NaBUru38 I know you said you weren't up for doing it due to time but do you think you would reconsider? The process would now only take 3 days with you sending your song Tuesday and voting on Thursday, which isn't really too much time taken up.

    • Some details on the IIHF's 3 on 3 hockey proposal: 8 team tournament for men's and women's 15 athletes per team, 240 athletes total (if they include this they better increate the 2900 athlete cap...) IOC expected to make a decision about including it in the Olympics in March
    • Not to the public until end of Wednesday, entry deadline is under 5 hours from now. Gonna see if I can persuade a couple more to join, like our Uruguayan friend who said he would be able to join due to time but now might be able to with the short turn around.
