It's a complicated political thing involving the Greeks.  They don't want to have a Slavonic country called simply Macedonia because Macedonia was part of Ancient Greece and I think it is a local region in Greece as well.

Yes, I know. The irony is that the Ancient Greeks themselves thought the Macedonians were barbarian non-Greeks.
