no, I think they're not...

the race through the forest is so spectacular...

however I don't understand why this sport is not at the Olympics yet...they already have in their program that so beloved by the IOC mixed relay that should turn Bach and his friends on more than a full store of viagra pills...:yikes::rofl::whistle::facepalm:

ofc I'm joking about forests are overrated :p

Unfortunately as you write they have introduced the mixed relay on the sprint distance... I'm worried that Bach and his corrupt friends will only choose to have the sprint distances at the olympics.

I would really like it to become an olympic sport. Long distance for men and women, and relay for men and women in the forest. But we know that's not going to happen. IOC will complain about the lack of gender equality, and it is too hard for new nations to compete with already established orienteering nations.

The main problem is that it's pretty Eurocentric. Tim Robertson's silver medal is only the second medal won by a non-European and it's still very much dominated by a few countries (Switzerland, Scandinavia, France and Russia). It doesn't seem likely that it'll be in Paris even though it's one of the main countries.

I fear that it won't get into the Olympics unless Switzerland or a Scandinavian country tries to host. It seems more likely that we'll have ski orienteering in the Winter games.

It won't be. There is zero lobbying for it. Here, noboddy knows that we are good at that sport or that it even exists.

And with Thierry Gueorgiou now retired the chance is 0%

Which is rather interesting as there have been quite a bit of hype internally about it not so long ago. It also seems like the French Orienteering Federation are pretty much alone, having had a meeting with Estanguet without participation from the International federation.

Some thoughts about the completed competitions on the rest day:

In men's sprint, the favourite, the king of sprint, :SUIDaniel Hubmann, defended his title. He has now won 3 times and won a total of 9 medals on the distance (both are records). Everything must be good as gold for our mates in New Zealand after :NZLTim Robertson won their first ever medal at a WCH, and the second medal for any athlete outside Europe. The last man on the podium is certainly also a happy fellow. :SUIAndreas Kyburz won his first medal at a WCH. He can show it to his brother, and succesfull orienteering-runnner, Matthias Kyburz. Maybe they have started a new family tradition? ;)

Side note: :BELYannick Michiels was only half a second from winning :BEL first ever medal! @heywoodu must be so upset about it. :p

In women's sprint, :DENMaja Alm wrote history by winnning her 4th consecutive gold medal on the distance, most by any female runner. She also became the first orienteering-runnner, who has won 4 consecutive WCH gold medals on a induvidual distance in the history of the orienteering world championships.

The woman on the second step of the podium, :SWETove Alexandersson, is also on a historical mission. She can become the first runner to win a medal on every distance (including relay) a the same world championship. She already have 2, only 3 to go. :fingers::cheer:Bronze medallist, :SUIJudith Wyder, won her 10th medal at a WCH, She establishes herself as one of Switzerland's most succesfull runner, only behind Daniel Hubmann and the legandary Simone Niggli-Luder.

The sprint relay went as expected. No nation was close to the favourites of :SWE. Switzerland came second and a nice bronze medal to Denmark.

Tomorrow starts the real WCH. Athletes travel from beatiful Riga to Sigulda. The middle distance for men and women is on the program near the magnificent ravine of the Gauja river valley.

I will post results and, probably, post some pictures from the competitions. An update could be up already tomorrow evening, otherwise the day after.

For now, it is over and out. :)

    • Well, I see that the national competition between mixed doubles and also men increased. Also actually amongst women, too. Before it was mostly Kubeskova team that participated in some international events. This year, Synackova team did really well in the pre-qualification just the final qualification was not that good. But curling is about details. Generally, I am glad to see that there is really much higher competition than it was 10 years ago. And seeing Chabickovsky a Zelingerova making it to the Olympics in such a young age can be really promising for their career as curling is becoming more professional, as we see Grand Slams and other big tournaments.    As for now, I think that in Milano Team Klima and mixed doubles can make really interesting results. After all, they will finish in top 10 so just qualifying to the Games is already a huge achievement
