Alpine Skiing 2018 - 2019 Discussion Thread

That's really sad. Goggia is always so exciting to watch and in case of top shape Vonn it's always good to have someone around who can challenge her. Usually it would also be sad because one would expect a skier like her to have a shot on the overall world cup but then again Shiffrin will probably have that one pretty much secured come January anyway.

Completely missed that a few weeks ago, but Melanie Meillard is already out for the entire season

Her knee injury from right before the Olympics hasn't recovered well and she has to get a new surgery (which by now maybe she had).

There’s at YOG participant that has amazing potential

  • 2 weeks later...

Johanna Schnarf's season is already over.  Yesterday, during a training at Copper Mountain, Schnarf fell, resulting in a displaced fracture of the tibia and fibula of her left leg.

She has already been operated, but  unfortunately her season is over. :(

From the 2020/2021 season, Solden will host a World Cup parallel Slalom races, including team event, the races will be scheduled always one week after the traditional opening of the World Cup at the end of October in the same Austrian venue.

FIS also informed that this February will be defiitely decided the future of the Alpine Combined during the February´s Council meeting, it is very probable that the event will be replaced by parallel slaloms already for the next World Championships and subsequently for the next WOG.

Well that's quite a rollercoaster read: first it's awesome to have a competition between Sölden and Levi so we don't have to wait 700 weeks for World Cup 2, but the rest...meh.

I honestly don´t see anything good in either part :p Mixed team event is meh, to have it now twice per season at world cup is double meh...but the removal of the Combined is even bigger meh...

Well I would prefer a normal race between Sölden and Levi, but anything is better than nothing in this case because I really hate that eternal wait after the first World Cup

Spoiler

Yeah I know I'm often campaigning for World Cups in South America or Australia and yeah I know the wait is gonna be quite a bit longer then :d

Obvious solution: remove Solden altogether (it gets cancelled half the time anyway). :p

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
