After Day 9 Rio: 161/306 events, 67 NOCs with medals

After Day 9 Tokyo: 179/339 events, 76 NOCs with medals

Already six nations with 10 or more gold medals. In Rio, only three after nine days.

Today has been huge for :AUS Australia. All four medals shining golden. A better finish than in Rio (8-11-10 in total) is already in the bag. Should their remaining gold medal hopes deliver, there might even be 5th place total in it. That also depends on how the :GBR British handle the second week. Last time, the ninth day was their "Super Sunday" with 5 golds (and 15-16-7 until that point) and they clung to second place in the table ever since. Track cycling will be important, which by the time in Rio was long underway.

Also a great day for the :USA US (26-21-22 in Rio) thanks to a strong final day in the pool. :CHN China (15-13-17 in Rio) is hanging on well with another 3 golds won today.

The :NED Dutch with a similar performance compared to Rio at that stage (4-2-3 in Rio). Another team hoping for a good medal haul in the velodrome, which is going to be key in hopes of a Top 10 placement at the end of the games.

:ITA Italy are bouncing back a little from recent disappointment in other sports but in total medals, they are set on exceeding the Rio mark (7-8-6 in Rio).

:QAT These are Qatar's most successful games with their first two gold medals won. Same can be said about :ISR Israel (1-0-1 2004 in Athens). Moreover, exceptional games for :VEN Venezuela, never had 4 medals before.

Meanwhile, it doesn't look like :COL Colombia can match their previous performance (2-2-1 in Rio after Day 9).

4th place counter*

(21) :USA

(14) :GBR

(12) :CAN:ROC

(11) :CHN:ITA

(10) :NED

(8) :FRA

(7) :HUN:JPN:MEX:KOR

(6) :GER:TUR

(5) :COL:GEO

(4) :AUS:BEL:TPE:SRB:UKR

(3) :BLR:BRA:DEN:ISR:NOR:ESP:SUI:THA:UZB

(2) :CIV:CUB:DOM:IND:IRL:KAZ:MOZ:POL:POR:ROU:SLO

(1) :ALB:ARG:ARM:AZE:BIH:BUL:CHI:CRC:CRO:CYP:CZE:ETH:FIN:HAI:HKG:INA:JAM:JOR:LTU:MAS:MRI:MGL:NIG:PAN:SGP:SVK:RSA:SWE:VEN and the Refugee Olympic Team

*5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing

I wonder how many countries can we get to. 76 so far.

Ghana has already secured one. Armenia and Kenya will be there for sure.

Nigeria probably as well.

T&T, Bahamas, Grenada, Burkina, Botswana, Puerto Rico all have solid chances.

I suppose Algeria and Morocco have some chances in athletics? (don't follow it that closely).

Guatemala has last chance with Badminton.

Chile has one last shot with Wrestling today, Moldova same. Kyrgyzstan later. Maybe pentathlon will save Lithuania.

Am I forgetting someone else?

:PER Grande and :KSA Hamedi in karate perhaps.

Also :BRN Yavi with an outside shot.

China to win another 3 golds in the next half hour (weightlifting, gymnastics and track cycling) and i'm starting to believe that they can actually win the medal table. US to be 6-7 behind and they are not setting athletics on fire as of now.

The next day will decide how good this SOG will be for Hungary, it's truly a Super Tuesday. The wrestling final of Tamás Lőrincz, the medal race of Zsombor Berecz, 3 Canoe Sprint finals where we can win (gold) medals, and maybe one more medal chance in wrestling with Alex Szőke in the repechages. Plus we will also play our QF against Netherlands in women's water polo. If we don't win at least one gold tomorrow, I will accept that at best we will have 3 gold in the end or maybe only 2.

    • Although it was a terrible Olympics for Canada, and my two favourite sports (Hockey and Short Track) really didn't work out for us, there were a couple of fun times.    -Women's Pursuit team winning gold because while it was not unexpected at all, it was still a great triumph against an amazing adversary.    -Dubreuil getting a surprise bronze in speed skating 500m.    -Really all of speed skating, Canada and otherwise.    -I really want to say Dubois getting gold in short track, but the whole thing was a mess.    -The last two ends of the men's curling gold medal game.    -Kingsbury getting gold. But it was more relief than excitement, unfortunately.    -I really like the luge relay. Canada was not involved, unfortunately, but it's always fun to watch.    -Men's freeski big air final was nuts! In all the good ways. That was truly the highest level of competition I've seen in a very long time.    -The dog crossing the finish line in cross country, which should have been the meme of the Olympics (not that...other thing).
    • It was also nice to have actual crowds again. I think the Beijing organizers did the best they could given the COVID regulations that still existed in China at the time, but it sure did dampen the atmosphere *a lot*.
    • I was in premium economy as well, the extra five inches of leg room definitively helped me stay sane.   For BA I was in business class and I just wasn't impressed at all, despite the cabin itself being really good (it was a 787-900 so their newer business class product). The service was just... not good enough for international business class - they actually made me appreciate Air Canada xD . With Condor I could forgive the service not being that good because of how little (relatively) I paid, and the seat was comfortable enough.
    • Yes. This was the best WOG since at least Sochi 2014. I only started paying attention to the Olympics after London 2012, so small sample size. But, this was the best WOG I can remember. European fans and atmosphere make everything better in my opinion.
    • There were lots of good moments , this olympics felt so special (I am talking of WOG). The last time I really enjoyed viewing WOG was in Sochi & this tops it. So many feel good moments, very well attended event with spectators filling up stands & making an atmosphere. So many top performances, but for me the  women team dominating the Biathlon event was really special. All 3 of them were just so good & gave top performance. I love it how the female commentator pronounced  Lou Jeanmonnot  & finally grazie mille  we loved it! Thanks for making me fall in love with winter sports again
    • I'm surprised that some Hungarians here are interested in some Nazis in Kiev, instead of their country's economic decline over the last 15-20 years, falling under Romania's level of GDP, when around 2000 it was the richest country in the all former post-communist region. But I understand that this is Orban's tactic to continue ruling and stealing the country, to distract from truly important matters and focus on trivial matters. Clinton's campaign slogan in the USA many years ago: "The economy, stupid!" I think that the current opposition leader in HUN should probably do the same- just do your thing and let Orban himself with all of this Soros, Nazis, etc, only the Martians are still missing in this madness, but that may come to pass
    • I found Condor really nice. I did upgrade myself, so maybe thats why. I would fly them again
    • So, wanted to update on this now that I’m back home in Seattle to say I had a really good time in Milan. I ended up not going to events outside of Milan (I went to short track, speed skating and hockey), and it was probably a good decision to keep things simple for my first Olympics.   Getting around in Milan was a breeze, and I feel things were pretty well organized at the venues (though the ice hockey venue definitively could have used a couple more weeks of work). I was especially pleased with the speed skating venue, given it’s a temporary track it looked really good once you were actually in your seat and things were well organized for spectators (even though it was a looooong walk to and from the train station).   So ya, happy with the experience, as a newbie to both attending the Olympics and traveling in Europe. Def made me want to attend the French Alps in 2030 (and subject them to my horrible-for-a-native French accent xD )   Thanks to  for being good hosts.   As an aside, I now understand why people dislike British Airways, and Condor was surprisingly okay, though it was definitively a "you get what you paid for" situation (flew SEA-LHR to get to Europe and FRA-SEA on the way back).   Edit: oh, and big shout-out to the volunteers who were universally lovely.
