  1. Race walking is largely seen as a joke event in the United States. There might be a bigger following for cornhole and/or spikeball. The few people aware of it spend a lot time making comments like you said.
  2. Would love to see finally get an invite. has been trying for a while too.
  3. Indian Ocean Island Games begin tomorrow. It looks like France TV (Reunion) might have some streaming. Official website: https://jioi2023.org Results system: https://resultats.jioi2023.org/wrs/fra/zz/frazz_general-horaire-general.htm
  4. Trout back on the injured list, and Ohtani with a UCL tear. The Angels might be cursed Fun Fact: Ohtani and I might be dealing with identical injuries at the moment (depends on the severity of his tear.)
  5. I was so happy to see McMaster get a medal. He’s had such an up and down career.
  6. Right, but we haven’t seen that scenario at all. I believe athletes can be disqualified if they don’t put forward a “full-faith effort” (at least that’s the case in many sports), so if athletes were to attempt that before the competition came to the “natural” conclusion they would likely be disqualified.
  7. I think it’s fine in this case. Both athletes clearly and visibly gave it their best effort and ended on the same height with very similar scorecards. It’s probably about as close as you can get to a “dead heat” tie in field events. I’m not really bothered by the tie here or at Tokyo. It still isn’t a super common outcome, and there’s no point in risking injuries due to exhaustion or risky tactics once the competition has reached a “natural” conclusion under the rules.
  8. Media race results: https://x.com/statman_jon/status/1694043366877442202?s=46&t=eeNhSzi4Rylqjvpt-IBinQ Laurent retained his title from last year. Kovac in second @hckošice, so at least you can say got a podium
  9. It’s certainly hard to find an athlete with a bigger personality or more visible emotions Dude delivers and entertains though, so hard not to cheer for him.
  10. Torch design and relay details: https://www.panamsports.org/news-sport/santiago-2023-presents-the-torch-of-the-games-at-traditional-mapuche-ceremony/
  11. Thread title should say “World Rowing,” not “FISA,” right? This isn’t 2003
  12. Good news is that qualification in C2 and K4 goes a long way in helping countries get Olympic entries
  13. Anyone else watch The Chosen One on Netflix? It screams Stranger Things meets Mexican folklore, but with a spirituality/religious conflict at the center. I imagine it will be somewhat controversial given the subject matter, but honestly it’s worth a watch for the artistic direction alone. Apple TV’s Invasion and Netflix’s Ragnarok are also dropping new seasons this week.
  14. No morning session today, but there is the media 800m this morning. For those who don’t know, both FINA and World Athletics hold a media race during their world championships.
  15. Longtime IWGA Secretary General Co Koren passed away. He was also an important official inside the sport of Tug of War. IWGA write-up: https://www.theworldgames.org/news/The-World-Games-17/Thank-you-Co-2469
  16. U15 Gymnasiade is underway in Rio Link: https://events.isfsports.org/isf-summer-gymnasiade-2023/
  17. Ta Lou and Alfred finishing just off the podium was a bummer
  18. He finally completes his set of medals. with two medal contenders heading into Paris 2024
  19. Scroll past this Bach! Do NOT get any ideas!
  20. Anyone still worried about having a bad world championships?
  21. Because that worked out so well for Spanish players last time
  22. You guys keep throwing around concepts like “public transportation” and “public television.” Those are very foreign concepts to Americans I’ve disliked NBC’s broadcast coverage for years. Although, to their credit, they do make the international feeds available for major events. Unfortunately, they started running commercials (at random in the middle of the competition!!!) over those feeds during Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022. Now, I can’t even escape their broadcast choices by watching the international feed, since World Athletics or the HB are catering to their preferences
  23. NBC likes the outer stadium shots because it sets them up nicely for commercial. The warm up shots let them preview big athletes coming up later in the program. I generally watch the international feed for most events, since I prefer to watch the event uninterrupted with neutral commentary. I agree that it’s annoying that the HB is doing that stuff on the international feed too.
