  1. Alright, first of two sprints in Duszniki coming up. I'm not saying I'm nervous, but boy, am I nervous
  2. Nuis' main words here: "I did not cut the corner, impossible! It's just impossible! I did not cut even one centimeter of the corner!" (repeat x100) Ok Kjeld.
  3. Wüst's performances can easily be 100% put on Van Deutekom's death. In the interview after the 500m today she was visibly shaken up when talking about it. She said she was trying to flip the switch before the competition, but that got a lot harder when the big screen showed some nice photos of Van Deutekom. "That hit hard", she said. They were very good friends indeed, and during Van Deutekom's career they were often roommates when travelling. Of everyone in the Dutch speed skating world, I think this has hit Wüst the hardest.
  4. Of course when I've got to get to the middle of nowhere in godknowswhere, Germany, trains are barely driving because of trees falling down due to the snowfall. I'm very, very much hoping the replacement busses will be functioning normally..
  5. Kjeld Nuis had an epic 1000m in the sprint championship, but was DQ'ed for hitting one of those little blocks on the inside of the line (which seems like a right decision). He got rather mad at the referee (a Dutch one) and in the middle of the discussion decided to just sarcastically shake his hand and say thanks, and then came back to check the referee's accreditation for his name
  6. Maybe when they are gone, we'll have a time with more different winners, which is good too
  7. Yes, they don't fall in the 'in their right mind' category when it's about sports
  8. Nobody in their right mind says elite sports are healthy. Practising sports (on an amateur, recreational base) is healthy, practising professional/elite sports is not. I happened to have a little talk about this with my girlfriend last week, and she described it pretty well: as a full-time athlete, you're always feeling pain here, feeling pain there, feeling like you're about to get sick, etc, also when you're in your best shape.
  9. Well, those 3 players who are part of the 10-20 best players ever will still be the same without Murray For most fans I think it won't make much of a difference compared to the past 2 years or something, I don't really remember anything big with Murray ever since the injuries started getting bad.
  10. Just to clarify: his main goal seems to be to retire after Wimbledon, not after the Australian Open, he's just not sure if he's able to keep fighting through the pain for 4-5 more months.
  11. And Innsbruck-Igls next week will have the status of European Championships now (for skeleton).
  12. Scott Baker - Glen Durrant, 1-3 in sets, 2-2 in legs. Baker had 50 left after two darts deep in the leg...and hit tops instead of bulls eye He was really lucky Durrant missed his chance to finish the match, after which Baker hit D5 and now it's 3-2
  13. Mostly because it's a junior tournament. It's just as useless as the water sports were at the 2015 European Games. Just like the ice hockey in Pyeongchang it can be fun, sure, but not Olympic-worthy.
  14. It's good for sports in one way, but not when great events are removed in favour of mediocre events just because it makes it more equal.
  15. If that would be the main criterium, we'd end up with only football (even the junior version), basketball, tennis, athletics and swimming at the Olympics
  16. Meh. At least when it's in one or possibly two nations, there's the "these are our Olympics" feeling. Nobody from say France is gonna think "cool, an athlete from Moldova, let's cheer for them because same continent!!"
  17. Yeah I'm not sure if I heard "You want to be Brazil's wax technician?" or "You want to be the Brazilian wax technician?". It's a matter of waiting and seeing next week, I guess
  18. Yeah I'll also try and forget the metaphore we sometimes use in the Netherlands when someone has bad skis...
  19. For the other one I'll go cheer as, officially, part of the Brazilian team next week since it's 99% sure my accreditation* will work out *I will officially be Brazil's wax technician
  20. Or Spain grows a set of balls and says "ok, Kosovo is accepted by the IOC, so they can participate here without problems"
  21. I'm still holding out hope for one real breakthrough week for Preuss. If there's one (World Cup-)athlete I'd like to really make it, it's her.
