  1. In addition, we have to remember that, BWF published this document before we knew exactly how many players will be there in the draw (depending upon redistributed doubles quota). Also, Group P and G are 4 player groups and they have a bye in Round of 16. So, they will be playing same number of matches as other groups (except top seed).
  2. I don't understand how IWF decided these reallocations. I understand, they not wanting to do the whole recalculations like they did for Bulgaria but they should have given these spots to highest ranked nation in World List not qualified. Norway finished higher than Albania and Georgia in both European Qualifiers and World Qualifiers and still they don't have a quota. Did Norway refuse the quota? Also, I am assuming it is not given to highest ranked individual as in that case, IWF would have declared the names of lifters receiving the quota.
  3. I think another issue would be regarding nations with huge bench strength. For example, Iran may send 3 different wrestlers in same weight category to World Championships, Asian Championships and World Cup. All 3 wrestlers might perform really well, but still all 3 might be ranked below a wrestler who participates in all 3 events and does only okay.
  4. In London, in the end they gave Singles Wild Cards to players entered in Doubles competition. I remember Vishnu Vardhan sneaking into Singles event.
  5. UWW has clarified that India will not lose the quota even if Yadav is banned. NADA is going to give its decision either today or on Monday. If it clears Yadav, he will participate. If he is not cleared, Parveen Rana will participate.
  6. As usual, good work @gvaisakh. I hope you will continue to give daily predictions/assessments at least. Regarding arguments, completely agree. With the huge increase in members, some friction is bound to happen. Already we had some heated discussions regarding Tennis and Wrestling. During Olympics, passion would be higher, so number and level of arguments is bound to increase. I, personally, follow some rules to minimize the arguments I am part of. I am sharing them here, so others may follow it if they want. 1) Ignore users who I find biased, bigoted, silly or just looking for trouble. Luckily, I don't find any such users in Indian community but there are a couple in the forum. So, I only reply to them with fact and never with opinion. I even try and avoid posting about those users' countries as much as possible. 2) Limit number of posts on a particular topic. If I find that an argument is going on for a long time, I tend to stop posting about it even if the discussion has been civil. 3) Assume that other users are not idiots, are genuine sports fans and have no malice. 4) When in a real bad mood, just log off. I follow these rules because I don't see any benefit from participating in arguments here from a strictly Return On Investment point of view. Also, I would like to give one more advice to some of the new users, post in other threads as well. It will improve your experience here.
  7. I remember there were reports some time back about AFI not knowing where Seema was. It was later revealed that she was training in Russia. So, sadly, won't be surprised if she fails the test. Similarly, for Nirmala, with Yuri Ogorodnik as coach, it is quite possible.
  8. Sorry for being negative, but I am disappointed in AFI. They should know that there is no concept of wild card in Athletics. There is just Universality quotas (1 per gender) for those NOCs who have qualified 0 athletes. India, luckily, is not eligible for Universality quota in Athletics. IAAF is not going to open a pandora's box by making an exception for Neeraj Chopra. If Neeraj deserves it, then so does every other athlete who has achieved the quota after the deadline. If Neeraj is allowed, IAAF has to allow all the champions from Junior World Championships. Once, they allow champions, someone will ask for exception for other medal winners from JWC. There is no way IAAF is going to create this unnecessary mess. Also, I am pretty sure IAAF doesn't (and shouldn't) care for petitions. Fans are allowed to be irrational and let emotions get better of them. There is no harm in fans starting and signing petitions. But, AFI should have steered clear of this. It is just wasting its time, giving false hope to fans and making a mockery of itself in international community.
  9. or maybe since UK has a very large contingent, they have been given some bigger rooms along with normal rooms.

  12. What about MD? Wawinka is the only Swiss man in the draw, and as he is not ranked in top 10 of doubles, Switzerland has to leave that quota. Any idea who could be next?

  14. My initial assessment regarding Badminton Draws: WD: Gutta/Ponappa are in Group A along with top seed Japanese pair, Dutch pair and Thai pair. At present Gutta/Ponappa are lowest ranked among the 4 pairs. But, they have defeated Thai pair twice this year and have split 4 matches with Dutch pair 2-2 over the last two years. Of course, they have no chance against Japanese but they have a decent chance of winning the remaining 2 matches and reaching Semis. Dream draw. MD: Attri/Reddy are in Group D along with 2nd seed Indonesian pair, Chinese pair and Japanese pair. All three pairs are in top 10. Don't expect them to win a single match (though they did defeat Chinese pair in the only past meeting, Chinese in Olympics are a different beast). Absolute worst draw. WS: Saina should have no problem in reaching Round of 16. Sindhu has a tricky encounter in Group stage with Li Michelle but I am sure Sindhu would win. Round of 16 is pretty straightforward for Saina (vs Porntip). Sindhu has once again a more difficult match against Tai Tzu Ying. She trails Tai in H2H but, among the top 8, after Hyun Ji Sung, I think Sindhu has maximum win chance against Tai, so no complaints. You can't have easy matches quarter onwards. If you want to win medal, you have to defeat the best, so of course in Quarter, Saina and Sindhu will face top players like Li and Yihan. If we didnt draw those two, we would have drawn Marin and Intanon. For, Saina it is bad as she has a mental block against Li but as I said, if she wants a medal, she needs to overcome it. No complaints. Considering depth of the field and our rankings, good draw. MS: Srikanth should win his group easily. In Rd of 16, he faces Jorgensen. Without doubt a tough match. Jorgensen is a class player. But, like Sindhu, considering he is seeded 9th he could not expect an easy match. It could have been slightly better (Chou?) or much worse (Lin Dan, LCW or Chen Long). Final verdict: neutral
  15. I think injury forced exchanges might be allowed.

  17. Sportspersons are supposed to be cautious about these things. They have to monitor everything they eat to avoid these things. Still, if sabotage or ignorance is proved, normally doping authorities are a bit lenient. But this leniency is normally in terms of reduced ban, lesser sanctions on training with national teams, etc. But, once you fail a dope test, ban is almost guaranteed. If Narsingh's B sample comes back positive, there is no chance of him going to Rio. As pointed by others, UWW will allow India to replace Narsingh (if he is banned). I think, considering the bad blood between Narsingh and Sushil/Satpal, it won't be a bad idea to select someone other than Sushil to replace Narsingh.
  18. 1) I think Ihab's B sample is yet to be tested. At present, we don't even know if he will be banned or not. 2) According to Road to Rio website, 38 athletes (including Ihab, excluding Russians) achieved the Olympic standard in Javelin throw against Target number of 32. Neeraj is ranked 5th among the athletes not qualified giving him effective ranking of 43. So, for him to qualify atleast 11 athletes above him have to test positive or decline the quota. 3) Even then, it is possible that IAAF will not invite anyone new, citing deadline for team nominations is over.
  19. Barring a few, those are the official numbers only. And considering that this list has been fairly accurate till now, its safe to assume that for remaining countries also error would be 1-2 athletes only (a rejected quota here, a wild card there).
  20. I am reading Sandeep Tulsi Yadav's name as the other wrestler who tested positive. Are you sure about him being Narsingh's spare partner? Or is he the Greco-Roman Wrestler who had won a World Champiosnhips Bronze couple of years ago?
  21. There are no Wild Cards at all in Athletics. There are only qualified athletes (by meeting standards or via ranking) and universality quotas. IAAF is not going to create an exception for Neeraj or any other athlete. If they allow Neeraj, it will open a pandora's box as all junior champions will also ask to be included, there are a number of athletes who met Rio standard after deadline, they will also cry foul (rightly). So, AFI should not waste their time in trying to get a wild card for Neeraj because IAAF will not agree.
  22. Too many unknowns. Russia is not banned yet. Deadline for Rio nominations is already over. Quota place redistribution for some sports is easy (ranking based like Badminton/Tennis etc.) but for some it could be nightmare (for example Shooting). So, for the time being, I am assuming that there will be no more quotas for India via reallocations. If we get some, consider them bonus.
  23. Hopefully, his B sample would be found clean. I hope it is a mistake by someone, as the two other alternatives are really sad. If he did dope, it puts a question mark over almost the whole team as majority of them train together. If there is deliberate foul, it has to be from Sushil camp and I don't want to lose respect for India's only 2 time individual Olympic medallist.
  24. Yup, I was wrong. It is 800 gms only
