  1. Someone is trying to guarantee themselves a spot at the Olympics...
  2. Yes, but are the two rounds combined? I think yes since Bulgaria is below Czechia and Hungary
  3. Not surprised about New Zealand not showing up, they most likely would have declined the quotas. I'm a bit surprised about Australia, though I guess they can take the women's quota at the continental qualifier and save money by not sending athletes to Samoa.
  4. The results are a bit confusing, are they not combining the two rounds?
  5. Yeah, my bad. The original point stands, Belarus did not pull a Turkmenistan and flooded the event with pro-Belorussian sports.
  6. Yes, 16 teams from the World Cup and 8 teams from the rankings (2 from each continent) will compete in four tournaments of six teams with the winner qualifying to the Olympics.
  7. Most likely, unless some top team in Europe really bombs the World Cup
  8. The only event that was added to boost Belarus' medals was sambo, though I guess they liked acrobatic and aerobic gymnastics being added too. Even if you removed those events, the nation is still in an easy second place. Not their fault other nations only competed with their B teams.
  9. Only Spain gets the quota, the second one will be transferred to the final qualification tournament.
  10. By that logic, the five continental champions aren't guaranteed to compete either. They too need to finish in the top 16 in the ranking round (though personally I consider the ranking round to be part of the competition).
  11. Yeah, quite happy for Canada, they needed this win as their ranking may not be enough to make the play-offs and even though we'll likely lose to a top team it's still nice to see the girls playing well.
  12. It perfectly balances the need for continental representation (something the IOC requires) and the best teams. If you are the seventh best team (or 8th if your continent gets a host quota) in your continent then you probably have the same chance at winning a medal as the best team from a weak continent.
  13. No, if the United States win then the European quarterfinal winners will qualify to the Olympics
  14. There is also a chance that Germany doesn't select Reitz and instead selects someone that doesn't have the MQS in 10m air pistol. Basically, it's best to wait until the 25m/50m/skeet shooters are announced before listing the nation as eligible to compete in the mixed team events.
  15. Yeah, the Olympics has always been about trying to achieve a balance between having the top athletes/teams and having a diverse group of competitors. At best you can argue that the African/South America play-off should be reallocated to Europe. The other option is to have one quota for each continent (+ host) and have the other five be decided in a secondary tournament.
  16. Pretty much, you can have more events or fewer athletes, but not both.
  17. At least we'll get direct matches for Olympic qualification rather than hoping for European nations to lose to non-European nations. Though that is of very little consolation to Spain and most likely France...
  18. The proposal is that breakdancing gets a men's and women's event, skateboarding and surfing will get the same events as 2020 while sport climbing will have a speed and a lead/bouldering combined event
  19. I imagine the 3 28-28 judges favoured Lacruz Edit: Nevermind, the site can't do math, Lacruz won because the three judges had 29-28 scores
  20. It made sense since there was a possibility that "5th place" would get the quota (though I guess they could have followed archery's lead and said only the top 4 were eligible). I'm not sure how exactly the singles quota won at the Pan American Games will work should the nation also win the team quota at the North/Latin America qualifier. Will it go to the silver medalist or will it go to the second qualification tournament?
  21. It was clarified by the ETTU that only the medalists will be eligible for the quotas, any extra will be added to the Moscow event.
  22. It's Romania and Germany, that was the semi-final
  23. If you only take events that existed at the 1988 Olympics (before all these "newer" events came), Canada would have still won 8 medals, 10 if you allowed the female counterparts in bobsled and ice hockey. Sure we'd drop a few spots, but we'd still be a top 10 nation rather than a top 5.
  24. Because they (and other Mongolians) compete in a lot of 3x3 events while other nations only show up for big events. The world rankings really need to be redone.
  25. Nice to see Belarus trying to make this interesting, but I imagine it's downhill for them as they just used their best rider. At this point, they need a complete disaster from Russia's final two riders to have a chance...
