  1. I'm of the opinion that all Olympic events should have at least 12 entrants (especially if you are going to give continental quotas). If the quality of the field isn't strong enough to justify this then it shouldn't be in the Olympics. Fencing team events have enough depth to justify 12 entrants.
  2. When you think about it only 18 nations get to compete in each individual fencing event. That's pretty strict.
  3. Funny that Algeria was the overall 1 seed after the pool round in only one event
  4. Correct, Portugal just barely snuck in so the two quotas will go to them.
  5. R.I.P. The Super League April 18th 2021 - April 20th 2021
  6. We might miss out in karate and surfing
  7. As Fonseca already qualified in the singles, an extra quota will be available via the world rankings
  8. Puerto Rico withdrew from mixed doubles. Brazil are now the big favourites.
  9. Pretty much, without a qualifier there isn't a fair way to do this. Like if we don't use the rankings the only other options are a) No one goes or b) The IOC/Whoever is in charge of boxing appoints athletes.
  10. Considering that the rankings for Pan American nations are based on results from almost two years ago there are a lot of reasons why we won't get to see the best athletes in our continent compete.
  11. How does gender equality factor into this? It's not like they are hosting the men's events and not the women's. "Continental inequality" would be a better term.
  12. Yeah, it's not as simple as dividing the population or GDP and getting a number. Especially when you consider the vast differences between nations. We have nations ranging from tens of thousands to over a billion
  13. I agree there should be another one-person boat. However, the writing has been on the wall for a long time now. You'd think by at the latest 2012 (when women's boxing was added) that Finn knew that they better start organizing a women's division. It's the same thing with Greco-Roman wrestling. If you don't adapt you are going to be left behind.
  14. In terms of the number of nations attempting to qualify in Men's Finn it's at the same level as the RS:X and ahead of the two-person boats, but without a female equivalent its days were always numbered
  15. This is quickly turning into a show... Any chance we can get the US or some other country to host the event?
  16. Cuba loses 4-3 twice to Puerto Rico, including Fonseca taking a 3-1 lead against Diaz.
  17. The quota finals have been decided Men Campos vs. Afanador Wu vs. Cifuentes Women Diaz vs. Fonseca Silva vs. Vega Winners qualify to Tokyo
  18. One big issue for places like GraceNote is that they only consider the top three for each event when in reality many events can have many entrants with at least a 5-10% chance. This usually evens out which is one reason GraceNote is no longer listing the medal winners (the other being money), but you sometimes get scenarios where a nation barely sneaks in/misses the top three more often than not. The other big issue (which can be seen in world rankings) is that athletes/teams which compete more often (or in more prestigious events) can inflate their position which causes a big surprise to non-experts within the sport. I tried to construct a prediction model about a year ago, but COVID ruined it.
  19. Aguire, men's singles top seed has lost. He'll have a second chance in the second tournament, but he'll have a less favourable bracket position.
  20. The alternate doesn't count unless they are activated
  21. That's because Sri Lanka by far has the highest participant rate of all tripartite nations. They have so far attempted to qualify in 100 events while second place among tripartite nations are Kuwait and Malta which are tied with 59 events each.
  22. What makes you so sure Guyana will get the spot? The three highest ranked tripartite nations are Men Women
  23. The Latin American qualifier begins tomorrow. There will be two stages for the singles. Stage 1: Single elimination, finalists qualify Stage 2: Losers are reseeded in a new single elimination bracket, men's finalist and women's winner qualify The mixed doubles will be a single elimination tournament with the winner qualifying Brazil is not allowed to compete in the singles event while Puerto Rico can qualify 1 woman (and 2 men). Both nations can participate in the mixed doubles qualifier.
  24. Unlikely, our highest ranked person is Kelly Fitzsimmons who is currently 68th, but she likely needs to break into the top 30 in order to have a chance.
  25. It makes sense in events where only 1 or 2 athletes reached the OQT standard, but it get tricky in events with more athletes. Especially when you consider that most of those OQT standards were done back in 2019. Then you have the whole choosing athletes for the relays.
