    Yeah, both she and Vasteburg stepped on the inside. Because the HJ quals were on, they took away the small (2cm). barrier that is normally there. They are very strict on that rule now - they just DQed a French 400m runner for the same thing.

    I’ve told this story before, but about a decade back most commentators did not realise that the Kaisa Mäkäräinen who competed on the Biathlon Tour & the Kaisa Maekaeraeinin who competed on the Cross Country Tour were the same person.

    Precisely because they have so few good athletes. The ones they have they cherish & train properly. Even as teenagers they know how to shoot. Because Germany & Russia have so many athletes, they don’t get individual attention - if they have a bad month they get relegated to IBU or back to National level. If French athletes have a bad month, they stay in the WC all the same.

    There are also the politics of it. All Olympic sports are meant to be multi-continental. So somehow no matter what the rules are, there will always be places at the Winter Olympics if there are is one remotely credible South American, African or Caribbean team.

    Have only just realised that the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne suffers from the Driedaagse De Panne syndrome, in that it is in reality the Kuurne-Kortrijk-Kuurne. Five man front group refuse to help van der Poel, get caught by a group of about 20. And Mads Pedersen benefits with the sprint win.
