Last quota of the day, and yes another bout that went to sudden death: Mariana Pistoia wins the women's foil quota Hard fought last bout, and a big comeback from after injuring herself early in the bout. To summarize, the following countries got quotas: got a men's sabre quota got a men's épée quota got a women's foil quota

Our fencing team will have 11 or 12 athletes, which I would say is a really good result.

Nicholas Zhang wins the men's épée quota Camargo was ahead 14-12 with seven seconds left, but gave up two quick points (which basically never happens in épée). Really miraculous comeback by Zhang.

It has just been annoynced that the Olympic trials will not be at the Olympic pool in Montreal due to an unscheduled closure of the venue. A replacement venue is TBD.

It is. Ikeda had an 8.0 a few rounds earlier that seemed to have doomed his chances, but Zoccali Albizu only scored a six in the last round. In the end he only needed a 6.7 or higher to qualify for the Olympics.

So: as of this year it requires three years off international competitions to change sporting citizenship, which means that if Kharun wants to compete for the US in LA he would need to skip the next two worlds. Seems unlikely to me tbh.

Obviously we can’t know for sure long term, but he’s completely locked in for Paris. My understanding is that the change of sporting citizenship rules have gotten tougher for swimming since Condorelli and Sanchez made the switch, so this is likely long term. Him getting US citizenship is also just not something I would read anything into, he’s lives there (well, here since I also live in the US xD ) most of his life and, ironically, acquiring US citizenship actually makes it easier for him to leave the US long term if he wants to train in Canada after college (it’s very easy to lose a Green Card while citizenship is very much permanent). Personally, being able to move back and forth between Canada and the US was one of my big motivations for getting naturalized as an American citizen.

Ilya Kharun has acquired citizenship. I’ll let everyone panic for a minute. Okay, now that a few people had heart attacks: he plans to continue swimming for Canada.

Tye Ikeda picked up a quota in the 50m riffle 3 positions.

Quota for in the men's 50m riffle 3 positions from Tye Ikeda. had a ~2.5 point lead heading in the last shot, but scored a 6(!) to throw it away. Ivan Roe wins gold.

The fun thing about Hochul is that everyone hates her for different and contradictory reasons.

To add some information, Wang and Ly were pre-qualified by ranking and Jeremy Hazin won the Olympic trials. Wang if competing in his 4th Olympics, Hazin in his second and Ly in his first.

It's very satisfying reading about this news on Inside the Games, with the giant IBA banner across the top of the screen.

I would be shocked if the neutral athlete pathway wasn't something that was designed with input from the French government.
