pdr4332 reacted to hckošice in [OFF TOPIC] Coronavirus Pandemic
Ofc, there will be no tanks or anything similar in the streets.
Army and police will only control and maintain the situation in the cities. their main job will be to do checks on all highways and all major and minor state road exits where they will check whether people will move to other places (the only exception have paople going or returning from work (those people will have their employment contract with them to show it to the control checks)

Of course, police/military being violent, beating up people is a different thing. I am not aware of that happening here.
You are also right that there is a difference between a temporary and measured limitation of personal rights in the interest of the society (but here there might be a difference between Europe and the US on what degree of limitation people are willing to tolerate) and the intentions of some irresponsible politicians of using the crisis as a pretext to establish some kind of authoritarian model of governance. One finance/investment professional here in HU dubbed this the prospect of "palpatinization", from the efforts of Senator Palpatine in Star Wars to establish a dictatorship using a crisis as a pretext (I am not a big SW watcher so I have to accept this at face value )

Yeah, also countries who did manage to build up more significant financial reserves than those who are all the time having financial troubles are having their own big virus troubles by now, so it's not a simple matter of just shoving stuff around, even though people like to think it is. But yeah, it's a rather hard issue as to how to deal with this. Populist politicians going around and saying "this and that country are out to destroy us!" are a nasty bunch, using this for their own political gain once this thing has settled down.

After 5 of 7 stages, the UAE Tour (cycling) has been cancelled after two Italians tested positive and, that's rather new, not for doping.

I am not following Badminton, but if said tournament is to take place in Wuhan city itself, its 100% that it will be moved as the city is under lockdown/quarantine (and probably will be for the foreseeable future)
Whether or not it will be moved out of China altogether will probably depend on how this situation evolves in the coming weeks

Man, if I may wish for some success to Hungary in Tokyo, it will be definitely for your women's team in the water polo. I really very much hope that they get a medal this time. It is really unbelievable how bad luck this team has under the five rings. Beijing and London were already sad but the Rio was trully painful... no many athletes and teams has such bad luck like your W NT
maybe only Ander Elosegi feel little bit similar curse lol.

pdr4332 reacted to phelps in Tokyo Summer Olympic Games 2020 News
the truth is that they know they won't win a single match without their usual corrupted judges to protect them...
with all the officials from Rio 2016 out of contention, I expect also KAZ, UZB and FRA (at least) to drop their usual medal number dramatically...

pdr4332 reacted to Vektor in Which are your Nation's Best and Worst Olympic Games ever?
Best: Helsinki 1952. I mean, it's pretty obvious, 16 gold medals, 42 medals, 3rd on the medal table. We won the football tournament with one of the most legendary teams ever in the history of sport (the Golden Team), dominated men's sabre once again with some true legends like Gerevich, won two gold medals in Gymnastics, four gold medals in Swimming. It's crazy how strong this team was.
But if you want a modern example for the best Olympics, I would go with Barcelona 1992. 11 gold medals. 30 medals. Our two legendary swimmers, Egerszegi and Darnyi won 5 gold medals, plus for the first time ever we won the women's K4 in canoe sprint.
Worst: Beijing 2008. 3 gold medals. 10 medals. Worst placement on the medal table (21st) in the history of the Summer Games. Unlike the two "best" examples, I watching these Games live and it was a disaster for us. We had to wait for the first gold medal for sooo long that at some point everybody started to worry that we might not win any. It was a huge relief for the country when Vajda won C1 1000m. But despite the overall performance we still had some great moments, Cseh had an amazing SOG, won 3 silver medals, and only peak Phelps was able to beat him. Our men's water polo team won for the third time in a row, partially thanks to the Serbian team's total collapse and inability to beat the Americans in the SF. And the C2 bronze medal was the most emotional moment ever for all Hungarians, because Kozmann was able to win a medal with his new partner Kiss just a few months after his former partner, two-time Olympic champion György Kolonics died from heart failure while preparing for the Olympics.
We don't have a "worst" Winter Olympics for obvious reasons, and the best is clearly Pyeongchang 2018, because we won our first ever winter gold medal there.

pdr4332 reacted to Vektor in How Many Medals do You Expect from Your Nation at the Summer Olympic Games 2020? (2019 version)
I would go with 5. 2 in swimming, 2 in canoe, 1 in something else (Berecz, somebody in fencing, somebody in shooting).

pdr4332 reacted to heywoodu in Ski Jumping at the Winter Olympic Games 2018
Yep. Actually, Norway winning the team event (which would be the most expected result at the moment) would be a perfect way to end the men's ski jumping, with all three major nations at the moment winning a gold medal, as one might have hoped.

Hope they will do more races in Lillehammer in the future. More variance in the top3 nationalities is more than welcome ::D
Hopefully one day Formula 1 will also look like this race. Otherwise it is like a normal luge race: Germany-Germany-Germany-Germany (errr, Mercedes-Mercedes-Mercedes-Mercedes :D)

Could anyone put here some info on Latvia? Did not find anything recent on their federation site, even in Latvian
Any info on the composition of the Russia / OAR team? One can know for sure that T. Ivanova will not be included due to her Olympic ban, but nothing else
