JoshMartini007 2,214 Posted May 11, 2016 #241 Share Posted May 11, 2016 More or less. ITTF set aside 22 quotas for team members which have not qualified in the singles tournament. This was done to guarantee nations which qualified 1 athlete to the singles tournament, but also qualified a team two athletes in order to make a team. Of course in hindsight it is unlikely we will need more than 16 quotas. North America is guaranteed to always have 2 from the same nation while Asia, Europe and Oceania are pretty much guaranteed to have 2. Africa is still very likely to have a nation with 2 as long as Egypt and Nigeria remain the top nations. The only scenario where a nation would need 2 team athlete quotas is for Latin America and the host. Of course it’s better to be safe than sorry when making the qualification document. The biggest ones missing are China, Japan, South Korea and Chinese Taipei. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some internal selection going on between eligible players. Sweden has also yet to confirm Kristian Karlsson. There is the possibility of an internal selection from there too or maybe they just haven’t gotten around to doing it, they were quite slow to accept the quotas after the European qualifiers. We reached the Semi-Finals at the recent World Championships, so hopefully a good result can regain some government funding for Table Tennis, which currently recieves no government funding, to improve British table tennis in the future. JoshMartini007 2,214 Posted May 19, 2016 #249 Share Posted May 19, 2016 To keep things correct China has declined its men’s (Fan Zhendong) and women’s (Liu Shiwen) singles quotas obtained from the world rankings it has been reallocated to China’s Xu Xin and China’s Ding Ning respectively. Oddly enough China did not accept the quotas. Similarly Japan declined its men’s singles (Maharu Yoshimura) quota causing it to reallocated back to Japan’s Koki Niwa. Japan has accepted the quota.
