HSBC SVNS Singapore is on right now. Wouldn’t normally mention any of the action before the event ends unless any big wins happen, but I just wanted to discuss something. What’s going on with our men’s team? In Singapore, they started off with close loses to New Zealand (22-17, off a last minute try by Kitiona Vay) and Australia (21-14), which are good results. Can’t read too much into that though, usually they play at least one close match every event against a strong team, and then finish in dead last. That shouldn’t be happening.

They just can't finish. This is commonly seen in inexperience teams or teams with a mental block.

The good news is we have the talent so once we get a better coaching staff we could be something special.

    I have a question )

What is the status of the tournament "Swim Wars" which took place on the 27-28th of April in Banja Luka?

Russians sent there almost all their stars won almost all gold without neutral status because it was c club tournament (and it looks like it was paid by russians too).

Will their times at this tournament taken into account as Olympic qualification?

There was an eligible meet during those days in Banja Luka, but it's called the April 22nd International Swim Meet. Was this the same event?

  3. I fixed the official ranking section on Wikipedia so it should be accurate as of now.

:AUS needs to decline two quotas between MS/WS/WD/XD.

There will likely be changes between which individual/pair a nation will select which may affect the total number of single athletes. Additionally, a nation (New Zealand) may outright reject a quota or injuries may cause someone to withdraw.

where does this ranking come from, are they talking about reallocation?

The person has made a few assumptions. Particularly,

    1. Australia and New Zealand will decline their singles quota (Possible to likely)

    2. The tripartite quotas will be reallocated (Not going to happen)

  5. Here are eligible tripartite nations which competed at the zone qualifiers. While technically not a requirement to be selected, I don't want to go through the entire rankings and consider athletes whom competed at a random event. At least here they had the goal of trying to qualify to the Olympics. Additionally, I removed tripartite nations which already qualified an athlete in a different event. The tripartite committee rarely awards quotas to nations already with quotas.

Most of the athletes did poorly at their zonal qualifiers. Additionally, the nation has to formally apply for the quota months ago. Considering fencing had no direct tripartite quotas, some nations may have skipped applying for it in favour of other events.

I hope Cabo Verde and Mali get a quota, but we'll see.

What's the deal with the universality places? If all 3 aren't taken do the remaining spot(s) get reallocated via the rankings to make up the 37 athlete limit in each event?

Since France is not using any of its 8 host quotas, they are first awarded to tripartite nations. If they are not allocated, then they are awarded to the next highest ranked eligible athlete across all events. An event may only have a maximum of three additional entries so each event will have between 34 to 37 entrants.

  7. My apologies, I misread. :ESP Llavador is a bit unfortunate, but at the same time he was the big favourite to win here and couldn't convert. It's not like the system prevented him from qualifying because even higher ranked athletes were in the way. He'll be the only person in the top 30 to miss out (excluding nations with more than 3 athletes).

The team events can be fixed by awarding the continental quotas first then the next four highest ranked nations. This would drop Poland (who was 9th) and Canada while Hong Kong and South Korea would qualify.

As much as the parochial side of me is sad to see Stutchbury miss out, she had her shot and her ranking puts her roughly on the borderline anyway.

I feel more for Carlos Llavador from Spain in the men's foil. He's ranked 12th.

He's looking likely to miss out. But in the individual event, we'll see 3 Polish fencers and 3 Canadians, none of whom are within the top 30 in the rankings. Nothing against any of those athletes, it's just a weird system.

It just seems somewhat perverse that *multiple* lower ranked athletes get to take part in the individual because they are just good enough to get a quota in another event, whereas an individual clearly more talented misses out.

Canada has two fencers in the top 30 while Poland has one. In fact, they are all in the top 15.

When the options are lower ranked team athletes get to participate or no one participates I personally would go with the former.
