Women's Rugby Sevens Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Oh, I never hear about that rule, with actually sounds pretty unfair too, by the way, but it would make for more decent teams at the Olympics...

if they held the South American Qualification Tournament were all teams are even worse than Mexico...

Brazil is far stronger than anyone and I would say on paper both Argentina and Colombia would defeat Mexico plus on a good day weaker teams like Jamaica could defeat Mexico. Our continent is quite weak outside of Canada/US which is why WorldRugby had that rule.

The NA qualification tournament will only be held if either or both Canada and the USA fail to qualify among the top 4.

That's incorrect.

Oops, it should say if both qualify through the top 4, then the NA tournament won't be held. Realistically those are the only 2 with a chance of finishing in the top 2.

Is this only the case for North America?

Any news about the continental qualification events?

It's still a bit early for rugby since the tournaments will be held during the second half of the year.

According to Ireland the European qualifier will be the Sevens Grand Prix. Rugby Africa will use the Africa Cup Sevens as their qualifier. Asia will have their own separate tournament (:CHN Nov. 9 for women and :KOR Nov. 23-24 for men). Nothing else for other continents. World Rugby is one of the slower sports for giving information.

Updated ranking after four of six rounds:

  1. :NZL New Zealand 72 points
  2. :CAN Canada 66 points
  3. :USA United States 64 points
  4. :AUS Australia 56 points
  5. :FRA France 46 points
  6. :IRL Republic of Ireland 38 points
  7. :GBR Great Britain 37 points
  8. :RUS Russia 34 points
  9. :ESP Spain 16 points
  10. :FIJ Fiji 13 points
  11. :CHN China 10 points

(The All-Ireland team is attempting to qualify on behalf of the Republic of Ireland and England is attempting to qualify on behalf of the UK).

New Zealand, Canada and the United States are all but assured to qualify. In fact all three of then can clinch qualification simply by finishing ahead of (or close enough to) France in Langford. France has a slim chance to sneak in over Australia, maybe hosting the final event will help them.
