Track Cycling UCI World Championships 2018

Recommended Posts

Sadly there is no elimination race, unless the one run in the omnium competitions. I wonder why, as it probably is the most spectacular race, in my personal opinion.

However, can't wait for the start. Italy is going to take parts in almost every event and finally it looks like we have returned to be a reference nation, at least in the endurance :d

I am very surprised to see Stefan Bötticher back, never dreamt of this happening, amazing news for german cycling. For me its a scandal that he wasnt allowed to compete individually here, but i guess some people were afraid of him, especially since the situation wasnt much different than the situation we had with Bos last year.

On the other hand i am very sad that Max Niederlag ended his career, but if you cant motivate yourself anymore its better to end your career than to take away a spot from a motivated athlete. Domenic Weinstein, by far the most important athlete of the german team pursuit team wont compete due to illness, so if Germany ever had a small medal chance in this event, the chance is gone now.

German expectations:

2 x gold in womens sprint/keirin

Medal in womens team sprint

Medal in mens team sprint

Every other medal in an olympic discipline would be a surprise, unless Eilers finally gets his shit together in Keirin ...

With 2 more golds here Kristina Vogel could tie Anna Mears' record of 11 gold medals. Doing it at 27 years of age would make it even more impressive in my opinion. If she continues her dominance until 2020, she could very well put the record out of everyone's reach for a very long time.

I am really looking forward to see whether Pauline Grabosch can do some damage here.

The elimination race is great to watch. I imagine the UCI doesn't want another long distance event, especially one that would be around the same distance as the scratch race, even if the strategies within the events are different.

I'm surprised most of all that UCI doesn't complain with IOC for low number of events in track cycling. Potentially, track cycling (and cycling in general) could be as popular as athletics or acquatics, and it will definitely deserve more medal events

I agree, but I think they see road as the money-maker. There's a reason guys like Gaviria leave track (and he's killing it in road so it's hard to fault him).

I will be paying close attention to the keirin, of course.

Athletics and aquatics are much more popular than track cycling

True, and it essentially for two main reasons:

1) you don't need specific structures for practicing it (at least at lower levels)

2) no great "characters" exist in cycling, and especially in track cycling

If UCI cannot do anything for the first, then it should work on the second: add medal events in the programme of world championships and world cup so that three/four athletes can be rivals in 5/6 different sports. That is how popularity starts, according to me

Characters very much exist especially in road cycling, but yeah, in track cycling it's all a bit smaller in terms of attention. Maybe because there's so few big events, like I get the feeling at half the World Cups it's mostly the C-level riders who even are there.

I agree, there's no reason to not have a bunch of events at the World Championship though they should spend a few years introducing it at world cup to increase participation.

    • Basically, NOCs can attempt to qualify in additional events without gaining athlete quotas. For example, let's say a nation already qualified in the 4- and 4x, they can use the athletes they plan to send in those events and try to qualify in the 8+. That's where the extra coxswains will be used. If a nation intends to attempt to double-up they must let World Rowing know before the final qualifier regatta.   There's a good chance the quotas may not be used and will have to be reallocated. Looking at 2024, only  would have been eligible for the men while the women there's . With that said there's no guarantee they would have wanted to double-up their athletes.   In reality we are more likely to see the reverse, nations who qualified in the 4x, 4-, or 8+ doubling-up athletes for the 1x, 2x, 2-.
    • Hey everyone, how are you all?   Reading the qualification document here and the "3 quotas for additional coxswain" is very confusing to me. Can someone (try to) explain to me please how those quotas will be assigned?    Thank you so much

    • In a country as big as , the odds of Olympians being close to you are quite small; however, once I realized several months ago that even a state as small as mine hosts Olympians on occasion, I decided to scour each sport's calendar to make sure I caught them when they come around.  That led me to the middle of nowhere in my own state today, where there was a 4* Eventing competition, featuring a couple of Olympians and/or World Champion athletes.   Most all the athletes here were local or from USA, but there were a couple who compete for   or .  When we walked up, I had no idea what I was doing.  I thought I was in the right arena at the venue, but I didn't really see anyone there.  (There weren't any stands full of spectators, nor did I see any judges...it was time for dressage.). One of the ladies turned around and we struck up conversation.  Turns out I was in the right spot, and they were just on a short break.  She directed my attention to the upcoming athlete, Caroline Pamukcu.  Thanks to my research ahead of time, I knew she was on the Paris 2024 Eventing Team.  The lady we were talking with was the owner of the horse Caroline was riding.  After she finished with her dressage round, she got off the horse and was just standing there talking with her crew.  We went over and had a brief chat and one of the other ladies offered to take our picture.     I asked Caroline if she was aiming for LA28, and she said yes.  I've also since shown the girls and wifey the video from her Paris 2024 jumping competition.  Hope she makes the team this year!   (Caroline has a Gold Individual Eventing and Silver Team Eventing medal from the 2023 PanAms.  Boyd Martin from the Paris team was also there, himself having a WCh Silver and three gold PanAms.  Tamra Smith, who has a Silver from the 2022 WCh, was there as well.  Waylon Roberts, who represents  and has a PanAm Silver competed.  I saw a few more Dressage rounds, then watched them all do the Jumping.  Didn't get to see Cross-Country, but they'll have another similar event in October.)
