Slovak Athlete of the year 2017

 

1st. Peter Sagan  (Road Cycling)  3rd time world champion in a row, reach this year also the 100 professional wins.  Slovak Athlete of the year for the 3rd time

2nd. Petra Vlhová  (Alpine Skiing)  Team Event world championship silver medalist, 4th in slalom WCh, 8th in Giant Slalom WCh, 10th in Overall world cup standing and 5t in Slalom world cup standing, won the last seasons slalom world cup final in Aspen, this season won the World Cup slalom in Levi and in the next 2 races finished 2 times second

3rd Veronika Velez-Zuzulová  (Alpine Skiing) Team Event world Championship silver medalist, last season in the World Cup finished 5 times on podium, won the World Cup slalom in Zagreb.

4th Ján Volko (Athletics)  60m Indoor European silver medalist, U23 European 200m champion, World Championships 200m semifinalist.

5th Magdaléna Rybáriková (Tennis) Best careers season, from 453rd place in WTA she jumped during last season to the top 20. Wimbledon´s Grand Slam singles semifinalist, Lienz WTA finalist and winner of 4 ITF tournaments in 2017

6th Marek Hamšík (Football)  Last season he passed the milestone of 100 National Team caps, This season in Napoli he reached the 115 scored goals mark. He was the leader of our team in the great pursuit for the World Cup qualifiers play-offs, unfortunately even with all his work we missed the play-offs just because we were the 9th runner-up

7th Alexander Slafkovský (Canoe Slalom)  2017 European Champion from Tacen in Slovenia, 2017 World Championships silver medalist from Pau in France in C1 category, finished 3rd overall in the last season World Cup, 2017 World ranking C1 leader. World Champion in C1 teams for 7th time in a row.

8th Peter Hámor (Mountaineering) in May 2017 he became the first ever Slovak to climb and complete all 14 Himalayan eight-thousanders summits

9th Peter Gelle/Adam Botek  (Canoe Sprint) the 2017 World Championships K2-1000m silver medalists

10th Ladislav Škantár/Peter Škantár (Canoe Slalom) 2017 World Championships silver medalists and Teams C2 bronze medalists, C2 2017 world ranking winners

 

 

Special Award:  Anastasiya Kuzmina (Biathlon) Her successes this season (2 World cup wins, 4 world cup podiums, and World Cup Overall standing leader) happened just after the closing of the nominations, so she couldn´t be nominated for this edition, but the organizers decided to reward her with this special prize

 

Hall of Fame entry: Jozef Pribilinec (Athletics)  1988 Olympic Champion in 20km Race Walk in the colors of former Czechoslovakia

 

Paralympic Athlete of the year 2017:  Henrieta Farkašová with her guide Natália Šubrtová (Alpine Skiing)  in 2017 she won 4 gold and 1 silver medal at world championships, she won 5 World cup races.

According to Eurosport. In the official one Riner won, I believe? Which is utterly ridiculous by the way, there's absolutely nobody who deserved it more than Fourcade, so it's good to see the people at Eurosport have a better view at it.

At least a judoka gets some attention in between many other athletes from more popular sports. :d

It's not the officilal one, but it is from l'Equipe (and thus the most talked about). Actually, Fourcade never won it from l'Equipe (in 2014, he was beaten by Lavilénie who just beat the WR that year) and is ranked 4th this year after Mayer and Bosse.

 

I've never understood these rankings anyway. Apples and oranges really.

Is there an official one? For me it's rather simple: Fourcade had an insane, historic season. I don't see any French athlete on this list or somewhere else who tops that.

No. L'Equipe's one is running since 1946, and is the only one people care about (a bit). But,there is nothing official about it, simply the journalists from the newspaper making their thing.

 

I'm guessing that, in their minds, not every sports are made equals and thus one title in athletics (but not all of them)  > Fourcade's year in Biathlon.

      Greece and Portugal also have winter sports centres - but of course these are not homologated routes for World Cup competitions I have never been to Albania personally, so I don't know the country at all. I have been in southern Croatia, though, and there are mountains there but you definitely can't ski there (I was there in the summer, but it's also impossible in the winter). World cup taking place there only in Zagreb.    In general the case of Colturi and Kostelic is completely different: Colturi has no ties to Albania and Janica Kostelic was Croatian and didn't left their country even though at the beginning of her carrier (and also her brother Ivica) her father had to pay for everything and the federation's support was zero. This only changed later. I imagine that the Kostelic family had offers from other countries (Austria, Switzerland, Italy?) to compete for them, which were much richer (at the beginning of the 21st century Croatia was a very poor country and devastated by war). All the more respect for them because they were true Croatian patriots until the end. I can imagine the Colturi family in a similar situation... Her mother would probably negotiate with half of Alpine Europe for Lara to compete for them Which of course doesn't change the fact that the Italian federation completely gave a shit in this situation. They let such talent go in a situation where they hasn`t a single female athlete on the podium of the World Cup in slalom for a dozen or so years. In the giant slalom it's not much better either, only there the older athletes cloud the picture: Brignone and Bassino. However, behind these two there is absolutely nothing...

      Atalanta is probably playing the most beautiful football in Europe right now: spectacular and effective. It's nice to watch and they don't have to spend a lot of money for it.   Inter is playing very economically. It's not impressive but it's consistently collecting points. It's also the only team in the Champions League that hasn't conceded a goal this season.   Milan played very poorly yesterday but they won. They have 9 points and are close to qualifying for the play-offs.
