FIRST EVER GOLD MEDAL FOR GREECE IN ROWING AND FIRST EVER MEDAL IN A NON-LIGHTWEIGHT EVENT! :GRE

So proud of Stefanos and he's only 24 and was only competing in the single sculls for two years. He was thinking of retiring after Tokyo, surely this result will change his life and attract sponsors to allow him to continue the sport. I am so proud of him!

I knew he could win a medal here and believed for months that he could, but wow, gold! Amazing!

Every Polish expert & commentator says gold medal for :GRE is a major surprise :p

He definitely benefited a lot from the postponement of the Games. However this year he was very good, finished 4th at the European Championships where he was in a medal position for the first 1990m and lost it right at the end, plus two of the three medalists from there didn't make it to the A Final here

Also we've had other rowers in recent years when their semifinals but flop in the final. Asoumanaki/Nikolaidou in W2X in 2016 won their semifinal and got 4th in the final, Bourmpou/Kyridou here in W2- won their semifinal and got 5th in the final. So good to see someone win their semifinal and still win a medal (and gold!)
