After a very boring year, here is hoping for 2018 to be better. Apart from the World Championships and the World/Challenge Cup stages, we will have lots of other international tournaments this year: South American Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan American Championships, Youth Olympic Games, Asian Championships, Mediterranean Games, European Championships and a lot of Grand Prix events.

Russia is expected to dominate the sport once again, with Bulgaria, Israel and Belarus trailing right behind. Georgia and Italy also have some great individual gymnasts. Spain, Ukraine and Azerbaijan will need to improve their game after a slow year in 2017. The United States, Brazil, China and Hungary could achieve good results as well, but are mostly dark horses in international competition right now.

Thank you! I was looking for a live score system, but the official website is not helpful at all. If you find a live stream, please PM me.

They are showing the opening ceremony now, and it looks like they will show part of the individual qualification, which is nice.

I am very surprised. I expected the competition to be a lot weaker. Everyone is far from their best shape, but some of these girls mean business (especially both Russians, both Israeli and the Italian girl). Before the competition, I even thought this could be the perfect opportunity for Nicol Ruprecht (from Austria) to sneak into a final and hopefully fight for a medal, but nope.

The last few years were amazing for the sport, with new countries earning medals at the World Cup for the very first time: Brazil and Switzerland in 2013, Finland in 2014, Georgia in 2015, and the United States in 2016. Then in 2017 we did not have a new country earning a medal, and in 2018 competition is very, very tough since the first stage. Whoa.

    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?
    • I thought about accumulating, but for higher drama it may be reset like in cycling track elimination races
    • Those are the national junior championships, national championships are in Steinkjer, starting tomorrow: FIS | Steinkjer (NOR) - Event Details - Cross-Country
    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
