All this quota cutting all over the board in the Olympics is bullshit anyway. Stop adding nonsense events and there you go.

All in the name of gender equality.

They’re not cutting quotas to make way for gender equality. They’re doing it (at least the IOC) claims to save money. They think the reason cities don’t want to host is because there are too many athletes . Maybe, just maybe it’s the ridiculous demands of the IOC: personal greeters for every IOC members at the airport, 4/5 star lodging for all members, local/seasonal pastries to served at meetings, Coke products available at all times, etc.

Their press release touting quotas for 2022 indicated this was done for gender equality...

That's part of it. But they are also cutting the total number of quotas, which is obviously not related to gender equality.

At best, a few select quotas here and there were cut for gender equality. The rest to save money for the host city, so that the IOC can continue to exist lavishly.

THey cut quotas in some events so others could get higher women's quotas.

Women's hockey for ex. Speed skating cutting quotas likely means equal men and women (before it was men more than women).

Which, as I’ve argued forever, is how it should have been years ago. Gender equality is a rare case of the IOC making a good decision. I’d would have preferred that just add more quotas to women’s events, without taking men’s quotas though. I can’t have everything when it comes to the IOC.

Considering that skating is arguably one of the more competitve events with 3/4 continents able to win medals and one about to emerge (South America with Colombia), it boggles the mind to cut quotas there.

Though having ice dance and pairs equal (so minus 8 quotas) would not do much. Meaning speed skating is going to lose a sizeable chunk. The way short track is set up, I do not think you can cut quotas.

Yeah big loss for skating :(. The IOC and their ridiculous demands are to blame though.

    • So, JTB and Tarjei had 19 podium finishes in 2024/25, seeing as they're retired and won't be competing next season, thought it would be fun to do a completely unnecessary and inaccurate simulation of what breakthroughs next season might have:   The most decorated biathletes of this season without Boes would be as follows:   Laegreid: 6-6-3 Perrot: 4-2-2 Jacquelin: 3-1-1 Samuelsson: 2-2-2 Stroemsheim: 2-0-2 Wright: 2-0-1 Fillon-Mallet: 1-5-2 Giacomel: 1-5-1 Uldal: 1-0-3 Soerum: 1-0-2   Some interesting things happen, for example, Wright becomes sprint and pursuit world champion, Mandzyn gets a very rare podium for Ukraine at the start of the season. Horn and Frey get their first ever podium in world cup and Riethmueller gets a world cup victory.   For the nation medal table, Norway still convincingly takes first place:   Norway: 10-7-11 France: 8-11-5   And then everybody else fighting for scraps:   Sweden: 2-2-3 United States: 2-0-1 Italy: 1-5-1 Germany: 1-0-2 Slovenia: 1-0-0   Even without the Boes, only 9 countries on the podium, but Pidruchnyi for Ukraine comes in 4th for three times, other than that, only Finland and Switzerland were close to getting onto the podium. With how things are going, seems like it's going to be Norway's year next year too with all the hungry youngsters with two extra spots on the Norwegian team.
