is Stephens the lowest ranked player to reach a GS final ever?

You mean women only? I don't have the exact ranking but I'm pretty sure Clijsters had worse when she won US Open 2009.

Clijsters did not have a ranking before that tournament. After that win she jumped into top 20.

In men's competition, the lowest ranked player who won a GS is Goran Ivanisevic - 2001 Wimbledon. He was ranked 125th than but he got a wild-card. So he is the lowest ranked player with title in grand slam and the single winner of a GS title as wild-card.

No, the lowest ranked player to win a GS title was Mark Edmondson, ranked 212th. He won Australian Open in 1976 beating Ken Rosewall (#1 seed) in the semifinal and John Newcombe (#2 seed) in the final both in four sets. Newcombe was the defending champion. Ironically, Edmondson is still the last Australian who won Australian Open.

Good news for Kiwi tennis - if there are no results in singles, than there are doubles :d Michael Venus is in mixed doubles final, paired with Hao-Ching Chan. Venus won French Open earlier this year partnering Ryan Harrison.
