Women's Water Polo Tournament at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

Recommended Posts

Yeah... there's only one team in the pool, mistakes after mistakes from our team. It really is time to let Attila Bíró go as the coach of the Hungarian women's water polo team if we won't win a medal because this level of inconsistency is unacceptable on this level. On one day we can beat the best team in the world, on another day we can be defeated by almost every team. I am so fucking tired of it.

lol, :ESP is giving us all the opportunities in the world to save the match and ofc we can't score.

Terrible display of water polo from both teams in the last quarter, not worthy of the Summer Games. In fact, Spain wasn't that great on this match either, a better team would have won it much more easily.

Hungary is probably the most inconsistent team in women's water polo.

Hungary won four QF in a row and lost four SF in a row. That's the consistence! :)

The fact is that for some reason both our women's handball and women's water polo teams are in the hands of people who must have the emotional intelligence of a chicken because it's entirely up to luck how we end up playing on a given match. Either our coaches are completely incompetent or the female Hungarian players are in need of some long therapy sessions. Why is that our male teams are never this inconsistent?

Just to show our awful history, this is how we lost our matches where we could have secured our first Olympic medal so far 7 times.

SF 2008 :NED 7-8

BM 2008 :AUS 11-12 (PSO)

SF 2012 :ESP 9-10

BM 2012 :AUS 11-13 (OT)

SF 2016 :USA 10-14

BM 2016 :RUS 18-19 (PSO)

SF 2020 :ESP 6-8

And here comes our 8th chance...

I hope your girls can get bronze! I say that knowing I don't want your men's team to win their semifinal of course :d

    • Makes it extra tragic that she's still quite likely to not actually make it due to Leerdam most likely making it anyway despite falling...seems like everyone there just automatically assumed her 2nd place will be enough and started celebrating

    • I won't write about injuries (Fede) and non-sporting matters (Colturi), but the fact is that Italy has its worst start to the season in alpine skiing in over 10 years... Just one victory, and podiums- if any, they're mostly 3 places. We're also not leading in any of the season standings, no in the women's or men's categories. This isn't be it should be in an Olympic year in your country, where you're having your worst season in many years.
    • Plaisier blew 3 match darts and Ratajski comes back to win!
    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
    • Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel with a 5th place PB in Semmering GS!
