Schmidhofer takes first World Championship gold medal

2Q==

The 2017 Alpine World Ski Championships kicked off today with the ladies’ super-G under dream conditions in St. Moritz (SUI). And it was Austrian Nicole Schmidhofer who earned the first gold medal of these World Championships beating Tina Weirather (LIE) and crowd favorite Lara Gut (SUI).

After two days of snow hammered the Engadine region, forcing the cancellation of both men’s and ladies’ downhill trainings, today the athletes woke up to blue bird skies and ideal conditions on the Salastrains course.

Weirather had the early lead, and held onto a slim advantage after the clear favorite Gut came down, finishing 0.03 seconds. But Weirather, who already has three, second place World Cup finishes this season, could not break the bridesmaid curse today as she watched her dream of gold evaporate when Schmidhofer shocked the field with the fastest time of 1:21:54, 0.33 seconds better than Weirather.

Before today Schmidhofer had only two World Cup podiums to her credit, the last coming in 2014 in the Cortina downhill. But today it was the 27 year-old's chance to steal the spotlight as her time was not challenged by any of the later skiers. Two top names, Anna Veith (AUT) and Lindsey Vonn (USA) both missed gates and did not finish.

"The course set suited me really well today," said Schmidhofer after the race. "II should thank the Italian coaches who set the course because it was ideal for me together with the snow conditions It's just a perfect day."

It was the first World Championship medal for forth Schmidhofer and Weirather, while Gut celebrated her fifth time on a World Championship podium. Gut now has three silver medals and two bronze medals to her credit.

Tomorrow, the men will make their St. Moritz 2017 debut with the super-G. The forecast is not as ideal with cloudy skies expected, but Organisers are hopeful that the race will still be staged as planned.

    • They do have the by far best current Dutch NHL player though
    • Took a couple of videos, but completely forgot to take even a single picture and the file size of the videos are too big for Totallympics so I had to find a site to upload it to   https://streamable.com/ga23lv   Vibes at the game were good, place was loud, and I downed a $6 poutine from Costco before the game. Unfortunately, the game didn’t go so well, it took us a solid 45 minutes to actually start playing hockey besides some bursts here and there, and after coming back from down 1-3 we gave up the OT goal less than a minute in (Typical Canucks fashion), but  Lankinen stole us a point, they had so many solid opportunities on him and we had no business staying close.    Really mediocre start to the season for the Canucks so far, even with 11 points in 8 games, a lot of players not showing up (Petey, Soucy, Myers, Hög, Miller, DeBrusk, although for DeBrusk he’s been known to have a streaky game) and our power play and overtime have been fucking dogshit (power play has been like this for years). Shoutout to Garland, Hughes, Sherwood and Lankinen though they’ve been incredible so far
    • Hi I see this now. When is the draw? What do you need me to do?
    • North Korea and the US played the first semifinal at the U17 World Cup last night:
    • Happy New York Yankees elimination day to those who celebrate!
    • Sorry, I was at work. Starting tomorrow thru Sunday is busy busy days here with Halloween, All Saints Day, Día de Muertos, so I might no be around the whole weekend. Good thing the final got postponed.
    • Announcement   It is with regret that I have to postpone the final till at least 10th November. This is not a fixed date and is likely to be moved to the following week. The delay is due to jurors not having voted yet and preparations on the final weekend still not having been completed. The draw is still set to take place tomorrow but there is chance this could be moved day by day until preparations are complete.    With this latest announcement @Gianlu33 and @LDOG if you would like to rejoin the contest with this recent change then you are more than welcome to do so.
    • While we're waiting, let me casually drop the music from the two countries I mentioned earlier. I wasn't sure if Mongolia has ever been featured in a festival of music segment, but East Timor / Timor Leste never has, plus I've been watching their English-language TV stations lately, hence the choice for both countries   Anyway, here's       And     I haven't decided on two other countries, but I'll get back to you on that
    • Haven't done this in a while.   Count me in, I'm game.
    • I just need you to pick 2 teams from each of my tables once I've set them up, should be ready to go in 15 minutes (taking longer than I thought) and hopefully by then more people will volunteer so that we can get things moving quickly.
