Athletes who have competed at every Summer Olympics of the 21st Century

Recommended Posts

As the title suggests, I thought it would be interesting to make a list of athletes per nation and per sport who have competed at every Olympics this century (Sydney 2000 - Rio 2016).

I always have a soft spot for athletes who show grit and determination to compete at the top level across a long period of time and those athletes who have such longevity are deserving of our admiration.

The primary focus of this thread is so that we can track those athletes who are still on course to compete at a sixth consecutive Olympics in this century and who have a chance to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

I would greatly appreciate as much help as possible from all users in this project as I am not enough familiar with some Olympic sports.

Erik Vlček (Sprint Canoeing) for Slovakia.  Competing in 2000, 2004 (Bronze in K4-1000), 2008 (Silver in K4-1000), 2012 and 2016 (Silver in K4-1000) and still aiming Tokyo.

Not sure if you will count Martikán but he competed in Atlanta 1996 (Gold), Sydney 2000 (Silver), Athens 2004 (Silver), Beijing 2008 (Gold) and London 2012 (Bronze), but miss to qualify for Rio 2016, however he is till competing and fighting for Tokyo spot.

Also Don´t know if you count also the winter olympics, because we have few Ice Hockey players which played something like the whole 21st century at Olympics + few also more like Nagano 1998 and Miro Šatan was already the best scorer of the tournament in Lillehammer 1994  and he finished his career only 2 years back....

And I think we can find some of athletes competing at WOG since SLC 2002 and still aiming PyeongChang

I will probably make a separate note about those athletes like Martikán with that longevity, I know there are quite a few who still compete but maybe missed one or two in between. I will for now concentrate on those who have been at all Summer Olympics since 2000 and then look at adding the others as I would love to track them also :yes

As I know nothing about Winter Sports, I won't look at creating those lists for now.... maybe after this list is completed or if someone more knowledgeable wants to take the task then feel free :)

No Croatian that competed in Sydney is active anymore. Except Blanka Vlašić, but she missed London 2012.

As for equestrian, there are several athletes.

Dressage - :SWE Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven

Eventing - :USA Phillip Dutton (competed for Australia in 2000 and 2004), :GER Ingrid Klimke, :BEL Karin Donckers

Jumping - :JPN Taizo Sugitani

There are few more that competed in 2000 and only missed one Olympics since. And there are few more that haven't competed at all of them, but were around way before Sydney 2000. :d

Thanks! I will try to make space for those interesting athletes who competed at Sydney 2000 or before who may have missed one or more editions in between but are still targeting Tokyo 2020.... first thing first though :d

    • really sad when you win a olympic medal 3 years later and no one cares Of course it will be registered and so on, but all those moments of joy etc are gone. Yes its first Croatian wrestling medal since independence, but there was a medal won for Yugoslavia by Croatian.

    • Surely they will unless I am missing something.
    • So, will they appeal to CAS like in Sinner case?
    • https://www.skysports.com/tennis/news/12110/13262332/iga-swiatek-five-time-grand-slam-champion-accepts-one-month-suspension-in-doping-case Cwnt see WADA not overturning this. One month for a banned substance is very low even for accidental consumption. I’ve only ever heard that short for something banned only in Competition and therefore not seen as fully doping. .
    • big big news regarding Olympic bronze medalist and two time World Champion  Zurabi Datunashvili   https://ita.sport/news/the-ita-acknowledges-cas-add-decision-sanctioning-wrestler-zurabi-datunashvili-for-anti-doping-rule-violations/   to be honest everything was suspicious about this guy, his sudden improvement since 2021, his body, his sudden retirement in 2023 . its great to see him finally getting caught.   they will reallocate the medals later after the end of the process but his Olympic bronze will go to  Ivan Huklek, I think that will be the first ever wrestling medal for Croatia   his 2021 World title will go  Maskevich and the 2022 gold goes to  Bisultanov Bisultanov will benefit more than anybody else, he also gets a bronze from 2021 and  Kessidis will get a bronze from 2022.
