Men's Volleyball FIVB World Championship 2018

Recommended Posts

Argentina was losing by 8 point difference in 4th set (produced almost entirely by a single great serve turn from Zaytsev) but almost won the set :yikes: even had 2 set points!

Too sad for this loss and that we don't take any points from this match. It's weird to say this in sports like tennis or volleyball where you only can win by scoring a fixed amount of points, but I really think our team played great and "deserved" more. They were only beaten by very specific circumstances like two good italian serve streaks on the 2nd and 4th sets and a questionable call in the 3rd one.

Brazil's defeat was mother of all surprises ! but Russia losing to USA was also a big surprise. specially because USA wasn't impressive so far.

There is a big chance Brazil finishing 3rd in Group B and Russia 2nd in Group C. which means whoever wins Group D will make life just harder for itself ! add Argentina (specially with the way they played tonight not the disastrous first match vs Belgium) to this group and then this will be the toughest possible group in 2nd round ! OK Poland you can take the group :p

What a huge win for USA! especially after that barely win against Australia, now with only Tunisia and Cameroon remaining we should be able to get to round 2 with 2 teams with Group D and 4th in group B (though with brazil's loss who know who it can be now)

Teams going to the second round take ALL their points from the first round or just the points won against the other 'secondroundteams'?

However, this system is ridiculous. But it's the FIVB ...

Thanks!

How to compare teams with each other in the second round when all the teams played against other opponents?

    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
