  • 4 months later...

The road to India/England 2018 has started a while ago (before the olympics actually) with the early rounds of FIH world league. Currently the first european stages are underway.

Lots of debutants in both gentlemen and ladies, especially from Asia. The most "exotic" additions seem to be on the men's side: :BRU:CYP:ECU:PAN:QAT:SOL:TGA  Some of them never before I had even seen playing this sport.

The Prague rounds of world league are over and the qualifier teams decided... In men's the home team is surprisingly eliminated at the expense of lower ranked Ukraine and Italy (the latter with a bunch of argentine players in the squad).

In women's no real surprises as Czechia, Ukraine and Poland advance, though the "surprise" in this case would be Poland (the highest ranked team of all round 1) having trouble to beat the likes of Lithuania and even losing to Ukraine.

Next up is....

- Glasgow tournament (only for men), where the home team :SCO should win. Second quota looks open between :POR:SUI and :WAL. Completes the field :SVK for which just participation will be the achievement.

- Accra tournaments for african teams (men and women)... where :KEN men and :GHA women should take the only place in round 2.

- Antalya tournament (only men) in which :AUT should destroy the competition, second place and round 2 quota will be fought between :OMA:TUR and curious debutant :QAT which I suspect will maybe have some pakistani/indian/malaysian reinforcements.

Qualifiers for Round 2:

Glasgow: Surprisingly :WAL won the tournament. :SCO won the other quota.

Accra: :GHA won quotas in both the men and women tournaments.

Antalya: :AUT won the tournament. :OMA came second. At present Wiki is showing the tournament as having only one Round 2 quota but I think it is a mistake and there should be 2 quotas for this tournament.

It's not so much of an "invitation" but more like any member federation of FIH can participate in world league as long as they pay the entry fee I think.

Next stop is in :FRA (only for ladies) with the home team and :AUT:RUS:SUI:WAL. 3 spots to take, I'd say it should be very close between them but with Switzerland as outsiders (first time they participate in women's IIRC).

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
