Draw Results for FIBA AmericaCup 2017

IMO:

Group A is open, but Puerto Rico will have an advantage over the other teams; sadly Brazil is currently suspended from participation, so another South American team will take its place, probably Paraguay.

In Group B, Argentina is already qualified for the final phase, so the other ticket shall be between Canada and defending champion Venezuela; it all will depend on Canada's roster.

Finally, tough luck for the other teams in Group C, as USA is the clear favorite to advance to next phase, but again, only if they send a solid "B" team.

Edit: It seems likely that FIBA Americas will readmit Brazil, thus allowing them to compete in Group A, in which case, they could win it.

Angola has been selected to host this year’s International Basketball Federation (FIBA) AfroBasket following the withdrawal of the Republic of Congo due to "logistics issues"

Why they are using such a weird system this year ? was it hard for them to find a host for a 16-team tournament ?  or maybe they were just bored of having a decent tournament and they came up with such stupid/strange idea.

I guess because they could not a single country willing to host the tournament by itself... I mean sure it means some heavy expenses, but I guess in a country like Argentina, Puerto Rico or Mexico they will have enough revenue from sponsors, TV rights and ticket sales.

I agree with you this system is stupid and unfair, specially because Argentina has a wild card to the semis, even if they team perform terrible in the preliminaries (which I hope won't happen but you never know); plus this tournament is also supposed to serve as the qualifier for 2019 Pan American Games, giving 7th tickets which still keeps me wondering how are the planning to determine.

    • There is a transgender volleyball player here in Brazil; there was even a recent controversy (this year) when a city banned her from playing in a certain competition, which ended up in court, ultimately in her favor.   But the situation is much simpler than that; the reason for this decision is because of the two female boxers who won at Paris 2024 (who apparently are not transgender).

    • there were rumors about it for quite a while, but as I wrote, it was never confirmed so, it might well be just some haters throwing out some shit on her 🤷
    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
    • Mary Rand has died aged 86. The first British woman to win a Gold in track and field at the 1964 Tokyo Games (where she also took home a further two medals in the Women’s 4x100m relay and Pentathlon).
    • Athing Mu competed in the USA trials in 2024 and 2025 post the 2023 rule changes. She also won Gold in 2022 and Bronze in 2023.    Jelimo the jury is out. She doesn’t look male like the other two do.
    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
