:KOR South Korea has announced its initial team after their Olympic Trials. In total 5 women have been selected. I imagine they will add more, but I don't know their internal evaluation.

In fact, Nam Yoo-sun, the first ever South Korean to enter the Olympic final in 2004, will compete at her fourth Olympics. She missed her London 2012 bid after losing the 400 m IM slot to her rival Kim Seo-yeong, who achieved the FINA B-cut before.

It looks like :RUS Russia announced its initial roster. I used a translator so I may not be accurate. In total 34 have been announced. 21 swimmers reached the individual standards, 9 will compete only in relays while 4 did not reach the standard, but were added due to being promising young athletes. In addition 4 athletes will get a second opportunity to reach the Russian standard at the European Championships while Yulia Efimova will be given a spot should she avoid suspension.

The German swimming trials have begun and will last until Sunday. Qualifying to the German swim team has two phases. First they must reach the qualifying times at the prelims and finals (prelims have easier times) then they must reach another qualifying time (easier than final) in a different competition selected by the German swimming federation (you can only attempt to qualify in one). Thus athletes listed here will essentially be considered to be on the long list with the final list to be determined likely at the end of June/beginning of July.

:GER Germany Long List Qualifiers – Day 1

Men’s 1500m Freestyle – Florian Wellbrock

Men’s 400m IM – Jacob Heidtmann, Johannes Hintze

Women’s 800m Freestyle – Sarah Kohler, Leonie Beck

Women’s 400m IM – Franziska Hentke

The "different competition" is not selected by the german swimming federation. Athletes have to select one of the following two meets within one week after the end of the german nationals: Mare Nostrum Tour or German Open (beginning of July in Berlin)

If they dont swim the required times there as well, then they dont qualify.

International times at the german nationals:

Mens 1500 free: 15:01.18 for Felix Auböck :AUT

Womens 800 free: 8:40.51 for Julia Hassler :LIE

Womens 400 IM: 4:46.01 for Martina van Berkel :SUI

I dont know if those times are good enough to qualify ... ?

Only Austria's time was fast enough for the A (OQT) standard, the other two were OST times

    • It’s just a great weasel word.   We all want  to come back to International sport "when they are in compliance". But there are very differing opinions on what that means.
    • I doubt that.  It will mean only a doping rubber stamp and a promise not to swear at the ice skating moppets in public,
    • So, kind of forgotten about at the end of the summer season, we have two events to go in the World Triathlon Championship Series, the last WTCS regular season races of the year in Weihai , then the Final in  in mid-October.  All to play for because there are double points up for grabs in the last race, so effectively nothing really decided yet.  Races are tomorrow morning  time, so pretty much overnight in Europe.   Races are full Olympic length and apparently a hilly cycling course.  Here's the situation and preview for the Men.     World Triathlon Championship Series Weihai ready for another epic Wilde vs Yee battle | World Triathlon Championship Series   And for the women   Women's World Triathlon Championship Series rankings to heat up in Weihai | World Triathlon Championship Series
    • "once it returns to compliance" would mean it renounces its claim to Crimea... Can't see that happening any time soon.
    • Maggie MacNeil   She was an Olympic, World (LC and SC) Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games Champion. Highly decorated career.
    • when I raised the question, I forgot that that there was no U23 medals for women just a couple years ago...
    • it happens when you think too much ahead about the next match (vs Brazil) while you have a tough opponent ahead. they gave up 4 silly goals in the first half and then it was a mountain to climb.  Iran had a last penalty exactly in the last second which hit the bar   have to admit Iran played terrible the entire match and didn't deserve the win but Morocco is also a very ugly team. lots of acting, deceiving, diving and protesting in the 2nd half. putting Iran in 5 fouls very early which made the team playing cautious
    • Morocco won after almost being stolen the victory by the refs. Those officials should be sent home after calling that joke foul in the last second.
    • and another medal. in Road Race this time.   Bronze despite a face crash in the middle of the race, her 5th medal of the year, 4th from 3 different sports World Championships

To measure nations' performance few terms have been introduced 'Quota' is number of participants per country in each event. Qualified but non-participation is not included in Quota. 'Top 6' is the number of events a country finished in Top 6. Conversion = Top 6 / Quota which implies Contingent quality. 'Normalized Points' = Points / (Number of events in that sport). For example, if a country wins just 1 Gold in Archery, they will get 10 points but 10 points/ 9 events = 1.11 Normalized Points. This metric will be high for countries who earn points in multiple sports. Sport' can be defined as set of events governed by same federation   Salient Observations 1) The nations' rank for points is closely related to rank of total medals won 2) Top spot for  is deserved as they have the highest participation, almost 70% conversion and dominate many sports like Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis 3)  finished 9th despite limited participation 4) Best ever successful edition for  as finished 21st in medal table and accumulated medals and points in Fencing, Table Tennis and Athletics   Please put in your comments and feedback.
