Snowboard FIS World Cup 2025 - 2026

Who would have guessed, that our first men's podium of the season won't be from either Yankov or Zamfirov, but from Alexander Krashniak :yikes:  This pretty much solidifies our men's team as the third strongest in the parallel events after :ITA and :AUT . And there are a couple of top youngsters coming up, so the potential is big for the next 5-6 years.

Too bad this progress is only limited to the parallel. Snowboard cross is again dead after Zhekova retired, while the other "techinical" snowboard disciplines have always been non-existent here..

Alpine snowboard - 7 competitions this season for now, snowboardcross - 1, but the IOC wants to remove the first one from the Olympic program, not the second... Besides, snowboardcross has team competitions in the Olympic program, not alpine... Where's the logic in that?

Neither should be removed

Nobody in the US watches it is the problem the IOC has. That and it's kinda dead as a grassroots sport - I ski and I've only seen one Alpine board in my entire life. It was displayed in a store as a curiosity and it was *old*. Much easier to participate in snowboardcross at a recrational level.

I don't think it should be removed, but Alpine snowboarding has a perception problem as a dead sport, at least outside of Europe (I don't have a good sense of how often Alpine snowboarding is shown on TV in Europe and how popular those broadcasts are).

all races are shown on public tv in places like Italy, Austria and streamed all around the Continent on the Discovery+/HBO Max

popularity, instead, is another story...

except maybe in Austria, tv ratings are marginal and the athletes are basically unknown, like in all the non-mainstream sports (which means, here in Italy, football, ferrari and -the newcomer in the last few years- Sinner, who replaced Valentino Rossi in this very poor list)

ps at least, there are quite a few kids practicing the sport in our mountain villages

The IOC is very TV ratings and ticket sale focused when it comes to sports to add / drop, seemingly. Which is probably not the best metric to use, but it does explain why alpine snowboarding is in more trouble than something like aerials or ski half-pipe (which should probably be closer to the chopping block if we go by competitive depth).

Alpine snowboard is by far the most shown discipline on Eurosport/Discovery in Europe. If it's not clashing with a bunch of other things, they are showing the WC starts live.

Snowboard cross would be the next in line and they are showing starts, but they are fewer and if it's head to head with alpine, alpine will get the advantage.

Halfpipe is occasionally shown and it's usually only some of the NA rounds, when it's the evening here and all other winter sports stuff is over. And they are not showing snooker, golf, cycling etc. :d

Big Air / Slopestyle is practically non-existent, never shown, unless it's some weird BA in November in the middle of nothing.

And it's the same picture in the Freestyle skiing. Ski cross is the most shown and probably has more races televised, than all other disciplines combined. Halfpipe is so-so from the rest, with BA & Slopestyle non-existent again. Moguls & Aerials are dead, at least i can't remember Eurosport showing their WC events on TV.

This just shows the complete division between Europe and North America. I don't think there is a single European country which prefers airing (or training) the technical disciplines than the racing ones. Which is the complete opposite than what it has been in NA.

I would say it highly depends on the traditions of some disciplines in certain countries.

Our national sport TV boradcated Aerials live last season. Czech Reuplic has it in the prime-time of its national sports channel as far as I know. Yes Valenta won his gold more then 20 years ago but it does not matter.

    • Some notable  retirements:   Elisavet Pesiridou (athletics - 100m hurdles) - She announced her retirement on her 34th birthday. She competed in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She narrowly missed Paris 2024 despite being in good form, the rest of he field seemed to get stronger and her ranking was a bit lower even though she was quite consistent. She struggled with injuries in 2025.   Fani Tzeli (taekwondo) - She was 7th in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Still, she is only 24 yo and seemed to be rising up again after winning bronze at the European Championships so it is a bit surprising.   Aikaterini Divari (sailing) - She competed in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Only 25 yo.   AJ Ginnis (alpine skiing) - Despite winning a silver at the World Championships he never got to compete at the Winter Olympics as he was always unfortunately injured. A shame as he is by far our best winter athlete ever. Only 31 yo, and I have a feeling he might come back in 2030 based on his last interview...

    • Well.  Having gotten it a bit at a distance a few comments about my experiences   Travel: Very happy. Flying to and from was a breeze (the plane home slighty delayed). The same can be said about getting around in Milano. Getting around outside was of course slightly harder, especially with some delays back from Antholx (but i guess that's not a big surprise when a lot of people leave a place in the mountains)   Atmosphere: Very happy around the venues, but it's also very clear that it's smaller than the Summer games. People weren't following the events wherever you went. Alcohol certainly made a difference between Paris and now. Sadly did experience a few who should certainly have stopped a couple of beers earlier.    The logistics at the venues:  Very easy to see that Santagiulia is new and absolutely not a perfect venue. Seems like some kinks were fixed when I got there, but there's still stuff to work out. The food at the Milano venues were meh and there were quite some lines. Tesero was a chaos when it came to getting food, but the quality was slightly better at the skiing venues.
