I mean, yeah IOC and FIS have a point that the sport has so few medalled nations in the last decades, but in other hands they still keep in the olympics sports like Equestrian, diving or table tennis where even less nations medal for almost centuries now :p

Equestrian has a pretty decent range particularly in Eventing and Jumping.

Lets be honnest here, the lack of countries that are competitive is an excuse moreso than anything else.

 

The IOC doesn't like the TV and ticket sales numbers and they want to include more "exciting" sports, but due to their own self-imposed 2900 athlete limit they need to cut some stuff. Fundamentally the same reason why Alpine snowboarding is at risk.

 

Personally I think both nordic combined and Alpine snowboarding are bad places to look when it comes to cost cutting, but hey, wouldn't want IOC memebers sleeping in four star accomodations.
