Melnikova went from best Russian all-arounder through the year to third best all of a sudden.

What a HUGE score for Mustafina! This is unbelievable. Anything over 9.0 in execution is just crazy.

And what a surprise to see no Russian will probably make Beam finals! Yilmaz from Turkey is hanging on in third right now, and she will need some luck with the Wevers sisters from the Netherlands, all of the US girls, Schaffer from Germany, Boyer from France, Black and Olsen from Canada, and Flávia Saraiva from Brazil still to come, but she definitely has a clear chance to make it to the finals. Fingers crossed.

Yes, I edited my post some seconds before your reply to add Ellie and Olsen. What an excellent group of athletes still to come. I'm so excited! Probably the greatest Olympic games when it comes to Women's Artistic Gymnastics this century has seen so far.

Also the Japanese, though I'm not sure how they are on Beam

I'm not sure what to expect from them on Beam, though they might surprise. I expect two scores around 15 on Floor, though. Miyakawa and Murakami are amazing on floor.

I hope Derwael makes Uneven Bars final, would be great for Belgium. Not sure if it's likely that she can hold on to her top 8 spot though

Really sad for Melnikova. I dont know whether Mustafina at the moment just cant do better than 58.0 or if she just had a bad day. There are quite a lot of girls who can score 58.0 and fight for bronze, 1 or 2 british girls, Steingruber, 1 or 2 chinese girls and maybe even Saraiva or one of the japanese girls. Her score on uneven bars was amazing, i doubt that anyone will be able to beat that. Paseka also should be safe to make the vault final, but if the girl from north korea keeps her level, then Paseka wont have a chance for gold. The russian girls might leave Rio with only 2 or 3 medals.

I think Alt might also challenge for the final on balance beam if she can keep her nerves, recently she has been on pretty much the same level as Schäfer and she has the same difficulty, although Schäfer scored 15.1 once. So far scores on balance beam have been pretty bad, this might be a big chance for the 2 german girls.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.
