Not that i followed the process consistently but from what i saw or heard, Coe and Samaranch Jr were obvious favorites. They were hyped, Kristy wasnt. At least i thought so.

Her being endorsed by Bach is completely new to me.

To be fair, I thought Coe and Samaranch were the favourites as well but that basically came entirely from Totallympics :d When I moved outside of the Totallympics bubble for a bit and read on a Dutch forum, people were more or less expecting Coventry, my mind was blown :p

But...please elaborate: why? Why on earth would it be good to have another medal chance for swimmers, who on average already have an insane amount? Or better: if the 50's are added, which swimming events would be taken out to make place for that?

There are a number of reasons why the 50m events would be a good edition:

1. They're good events to use for universality quotas, as opposed to 200 and 400m events which can often hold up events and put those who compete in them in a bad light.

2. There are plenty of splash and dash 50m specialists in fly, back and breast that are best suited to the longer 100m events.

3. The splash and dash nature of the events make it more entertaining for the audience to watch and the edition of 6 more events would give the spectators more value for their money.

4. More countries would have a good chance of winning their first swimming medals with the likes of :CAY and :TTO being in contention.

Swimmers would have to manage their schedules around these events, like they have to do at the World Championships, and you wouldn't need to take out any events as all you need to do is extend the morning session by an hour and the evening by 30 mins.

Alright, so then which events would be taken out for the 50's to be in*, the 200 meters? There are also plenty of specialists in the longer distances though, who wouldn't be suited to the splash and dash 50's, so that would not really change the overall principle...

*not because of scheduling reasons

You don't have to take out any events for the 50m's to be in, yes it would mean an increase of the overall athlete quota but it's definitely something that Kirsty would look at doing to include more events and to increase the participation of athletes.

I would rather it be increased through other ways personally, whether it's more quotas in an event or a new sport/event (not break-dancing though... :p)

As a big swimming fan, there's already more than enough swimming events. Please no.

You have 5 gold medals, 6 if including relays over 200m.

4 over 100m, 7 if including relays.

but only one over 50m, 2 in 400m, one in 800m etc..

Not very well balanced. And I would guess the competition is much tougher in the sprint events than the 1500m too.

But swimming already has massive participation in terms of countries, wouldn't other sports benefit more from that? I just really don't see how adding the 50's adds anything good, while I do see how it generates an even bigger imbalance between swimming and every other sport.

You'd be getting athletes (however rare) with a somewhat decent medal shot in 10+ events, with the huge amount of relays that are there already. That's just out of hand..

Tbh if you increased the quotas by 2000, you could very likely have the best of both worlds.

I don't really see that as an imbalance but moreso just the nature of swimming, you get a lot of swimmers who are good at multiple strokes and that quality inevitably translates to medals. But with how unpredictable these splash and dash events are I doubt the dominant names would have it completely their own way.

Also regarding country participation, Kirsty has also stated that she wants to eliminate the awarding of universality spots to events that don't warrant them and decrease the amount that each country gets - the 50m events are a good way to achieve both as you'd think the vast majority of countries would have a least 1 athlete who could do 1 length of an Olympic size pool.
