Cricket Discussion | Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Road to LA 2028

Great Britain from watching them recently I think its 50/50. They either do well or awful. Its possible they completely fail to qualify

If the qualification rules are correct England/GB have the easiest route to LA. They basically just need to finish above Ireland in the T20 world rankings.

At 6 teams, they should really forget about continental representation or at the very least require only three continents to be represented rather than all 5.

I honestly think that they have gone for continental rankings to make it as safe as possible that they get india, australia and GB into the games on the men's side, ESPECIALLY India which lets face it is the whole point in the IOC putting cricket in the games.

There's a bit more risk involved with the women's qualification, but as said above, the strength drops off after the top 4 teams so would have to be quite a few upsets

Yeah, getting India more excited about the Olympics is a priority of the IOC.

I'm more upset that they are still trying to force 6-team tournaments, when they should just make it 12 teams, especially since the optional sports aren't taking away athlete quotas from the core sports.

One of the more intriguing part of cricket was the potential of nations which typically don't compete in team sports competing. Yet we could very well have a tournament involving :AUS:GBR:IND:NZL:RSA:USA. Even increasing it to 8 teams allows South Asian or West Indies nations to compete

Yes. If India were #2 in Asia behind Pakistan there's no way the top Asian team in the world rankings would qualify automatically

According to the CEO of EWCB today, the intention on the men's side is to have continental playoffs on this occasion, but with a mind to expanding cricket in Brisbane 32, and possible India 36, by which stage it might be entrenched.

The idea apparently is to give priority to full members because the tournament is so small, and to have USA as host + 1 from each Olympic continent, decided by playoffs between full members. Which would mean a mini Asian Tournament, a mini West Indies Tournament, and three one off playoffs - GBR v IRL, AUS v NZL and RSA v ZIM. It's also possible USA could lose the host spot, and in that case, word is there will be something of a repechage for the three beaten playoff teams, the runner up in West Indies and the 2nd and 3rd from Asia - but only if USA is stripped, which is unlikely given they have proven ok at the format.

lol limiting Olympic qualification to full members would be so fucked ip I’d be in favour of kicking out cricket just for that.

Yeah, the elitist attitude of cricket which hurt the development of the sport is showing again.

Any nation should be given a chance to qualify.

That goes against what the ICC suggested a few weeks ago where they said that the continental qualifiers would be the highest ranked teams from each continent in the T20 world rankings
