I'm old enough to have lived in the early 90s with a conscious mind and I know how bad it was in athletics and several other sports. The 1984 boycott set us back years, Seoul 1988 was low on medals and we slightly bounced back in 1992 but only 1996 was back to the respectable results.

1980s were really bad compared to the 60s and 70s where we were a "powerhouse" in athletics, boxing, weightlifting & fencing.

Funnily enough swimming was one sport where we never did any good and have zero historical PRL success until Artur Wojdat in the late 80s/early 90s (who was allowed to train in the USA since he was a teenager).

I think that, Barcelona 1992 was a very good edition for Poland, but there weren't many gold medals. I would like to regularly win as many medals (just 20) now as I did back then.

@copravolleyYeah, 1992 was still better than 1988 but we had more surprises here (double gold in MP was a total shock and we did better in women's event which wasn't Olympic sport then). The weightlifting haul was like a dead cat bounce (Malak was tragically killed soon afterwards), we had two naturalised folks from Soviet Union, I believe Kozłowski (4th here) was later busted for doping but it was Wolczaniecki who won a medal and of course the usual rowing/canoeing combo so two sports nobody pays any attention to outside of the two weeks at the Olympics.

Szukała was like Wojdat's follower (also trained in USA) and wrestling was a carryover from the communist days though Wroński actually didn't win a medal here (but golds in 1988 and 1996). Bartnik is still the last men's medal in boxing. Legień with his second gold but in different weight class than 1988. Men's football was a total shock even though we played amateurs from Qatar & Australia IIRC. I don't remember the bronze in shooting.

Athletics was in the cellar. Partyka and Korzeniowski DQ from silver in the stadium gate which remains a well-known lore in Polish sports.

Silver on football also was a big surprise. Personally, I don't remember Barcelona 1992- I was 5 years old. My first Olympics as a real spectator were in 1996 and the first live sporting event I ever watched in TV was the 1994 World Cup final: Italy-Brazil. Of course, I didn't understand any of it, but I think I wished it had gone to penalties. But already in 1995/1996, I started passionately watching football on TV and playing it, which helped me at school, because I quickly went from being the class loser to being the best scorer and overall top player, so I can only be grateful to sport for that.

Tomorrow last chance for medal to Ukraine? Mahuchikh? Levchenko with no chance?

Yes (just on Sunday), I do not belive in our walkers - they may get something but it is a long shot.

About Levchenko - I suppose she has a real chances for the bronze. This season is a some kind of return for her.
On the other hand Patterson is not as good, as in the Olympic season. As well as Mahuchikh. I would sat that she is not the main favourite for the gold.

Oh that is nice, it has a season average tab! That is way better than the forecasts that only use everyone's heptathlon PB or (worse) the event PB's. Those are of course better than nothing, but using a more realistic average is perfect, thanks :d

    • Hey guys, I contribute Skeleton articles for a new winter-sports focused website called "All things Snow".   I was wondering if any of you could please spare a few moments to read my latest article on the World Cup finale in Altenberg a few weeks ago.   Any feedback on length, content, or just general tips will be greatly appreciated. I'll be sure to implement them in my Olympic Skeleton recap pieces. Thanks!   https://allthingssnow.net/2026/01/19/pfeifer-and-wyatt-win-the-finale-meylemans-and-weston-seal-crystal-globes/

    • changes that go absolutely against the Italians (notoriously the top swimmers and not the best shooters in MP) 😭😭😭   now it's really time to axe MP from the Games 😈🥳
    • I think there was a feeling before the obstacle course was introduced that really, really solid endurance runners were starting to dominate - in Triathlon you might call it the Alex Yee conundrum. Personally, I don't mind at all if the 'martial' elements are reemphasised as that is the real 'soul' of the sport - Triathlon, Marathon and Road cycing are there for genuine endurace, MP is in some senses a 'soldiery' test - one reason I thought Judo might have been a better addition than the obstacle course. But placing a higher emphasis on the fight bits over the flight bits seems a legitimate idea - though it should also increase the X-country nature of the run so that the test of a fresh shooter at the beginning is rather different from the test of a knackered one at the end. I quite like the artificial hill in rio.
