2026 Winter Olympics - Very Early Predictions

Vittozzi?

I hope she can do well, but I think she's not going to win any gold, as she's never been comfortable both with the shooting range and the altitude in Anterselva

I fear biathlon is going to be one of the biggest flops for us next year (the other disaster will come from the sliding sports, I'm pretty sure...rather, hopeless)

I think our medal table will heavily depend on the speedskating sports, on the big air events and on alpine snowboard, any other discipline's contribution is going to be marginal

Elia Barp? That's wishful thinking :p

I have more chances to become a billionaire

Sighel being the male athlete of the games for Italy is also wishful thinking with how dominant the Canadian men are at the moment :p

Nothing Fontana has shown either that would prove she could be among the women to watch in long track speed skating.

Thank you for putting this together, it was fun to go through. From your keyboard to God's ears on Canada's short track team here (I believe you have us at 4-1-1, which is realistic if everything works out).

Leaving us off the podium in speed skating women's pursuit was interesting.

Three medals of any colour in curling would be celebrated at this point after two disasterous cycles.

In hockey, I'll always take our girls over the Americans (was "lucky" enough to see them lose in 2018 in person, though. Only time in 6 Games. Haha...hahahahaha...ha).

For the men, I said above unless Canada finds a goaltender I'm not too optimistic. USA is just too well rounded. But lots can happen by then, and in a one game elimination tournament.

You are absolutely right, i must update Speed Skating W Team Pursuit predictions for sure.

If we're talking about hockey, I surely don't know much about this sport but i'll try to make some changes here as well.

Anyway, i'll try to update it every few weeks and we'll see how much wrong i am in Feb 2026.

You don't have to make any changes, especially when it comes to hockey. In one game elimination tournaments it's always 50/50. Anything can, and often does, happen. The last time NHLers participated was in 2014 and Canada dominated. But we had much, much, much better goaltending and even defence back then. Who knows what will happen in the next year.

Well that would give Slovakia like 1 medal at max :(

Which event (in your opinion)?

I can't really decide between Alpine Skiing and Ski Mountaineering. Vlhová definitely has the skills and power to earn at least one more medal, even gold, and Jagerčíková is the current world champion in her event, although we know nothing about the sport and how it's gonna turn out at the Olympics.

Alright, I might have been too pessimistic:

Positive scenario: 2-4 medals (counting another Ice Hockey miracle)
Negative scenario: 1 medal

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
