Nobody in Ukraine expected that Beldium could win. So our team "was sent home" by the fans just after the game against Belgium.

Our coach:

To beat Italy, we need to play better in defense, and in attack be on the same level as them," the Argentine told Suspilne Sport. "But they are four-time world champions. They have a very big history. The Italian league is one of the best in the world."

"We have to give our best. If the Italians win — compliments to their coach. But I want to reassure people in Ukraine: we will give everything we possibly can."

I'm fear of this match, because failing to advance from the group stage will be Italy's worst result since 1974. And in the VNL was tough, only 3-2 for us. Italian team is out of form and I think this is the end of de Giorgi's coaching career. France's prospects for the Round of 16 also look very bad, but after the women's gold medal, I'm more relaxed. I think we need to change our coaching staff and start from begining in a new year.

Both teams are weakened: you are missing Plotnicki and we are missing Lavia. This will likely be an ugly matchup between  two teams in very poor form.

You mean Plotnytskyi? :mumble:

Pretty sure he retired from the Ukrainian NT, only playing club volleyball now.

He is young, so nothing say nothing. I think that for a probably new coach in Ukraine, he should became in NT. Egonu also resigned for some months with NT Italy, becouse of our former coach- Davide Mazzanti.

:USA was up 2 sets to 0 over :CUB.  Cuba was up ~18-24 in the third, and the US came back with 5 straight points, but then Cuba did win the third.  US had to come back in the fourth, but eventually pulled it out.  Whew!  3-0 :USA!

And with :POR winning over :CUB:POR moves on to the Elimination Round!

Next round:

:USA-:SLO, who will face winner of :POR-:BUL

Ok. De Gennaro is 38 and still play...

Oh it’s for sure doable for him to retire and return after a couple of years (or sooner, like Egonu), but I wouldn’t consider him to be “young” for volleyball standards (more like in the middle) :p

Yeah, Hoag is still playing for Canada at 33 (didn’t formally make an announcement, but I assumed he retired quietly), and he’s still swinging rockets like he did when he first started :p

What I’m trying to say is that I think with Plotnytskyi, he’s not absent from the squad in a sense of you know “big players that could make a significant impact” because well, he’s retired. With Lavia, he injured his hand and missed out on these Championships.

But I realized since then that you didn’t know about him retiring, so… :p
