US will probably lose when today ends but there are still basketball and volleyball tomorrow Its hard to win or even hope when 4 down when games are almost over. I have no doubt about basketball but gold in volleyball isnt sure at all. Italy was great whole tournament.

Ok, but once upon a time divers from the USA, Canada, or Russia were able to beat the Chinese, but since the beginning of the 21st century they practically can't anymore beat him. What has changed since then? Edited August 10 by copravolley

I have no doubt about that. Olympic success was and will always be used in many other causes, politic ones too. China is expanding in all sports, USA loses dominance in their traditional strongholds. But i agree, China does know where are their best opportunities and uses that to the max. Before the Beijing Olympics, the central government in China designated each province to train a different sport. In the USA, this is not possible. There, each state has its own independence, and training is based on universities. This cannot be centrally controlled but this is the only way to clearly beat China. It's more that the United States is facing increased competition in their traditional sports (Australia in swimming, Canada in athletics, etc.). Meanwhile, China continues to dominate in its preferred sports (diving, table tennis, etc.). Winning almost dozen medals less than in London or Rio speaks contrairly. But i agree, China doing their job with 100% success doesnt give many options to USA.

Look at the DDR: was about 16 million population but they managed to win a similar number of medals as the much larger USSR in some editions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Germany Edited August 10 by copravolley konig, zob79 and MedalChampion

Maybe they should try to change the rules to make the competition more equal? Competing only for 3rd place in individual starts is a bit boring, and there are a lot of such competitions there. Table tennis is not that big of a problem, because there are only 5 events, I think. Table tennis started to be more competitive, Chinese men started losing more regularly, so its interesting to watch. Diving was interesting until Paris as we always had at least one gold medal not be claimed by China. This time dives were boring as we already knew who will win even after 1st dives. IOC must change something because if 8 golds are won by the same country more than once, something is fishy. Who could endanger them? Not so sure. I had hopes in Mexico, Ukraine, GB but they are just to weak. I can bet that with this system we will have 8 golds for China in LA too. opruh and copravolley 1

What has changed since then? I believe that referees or judges are hugely biased in diving. They were giving 10s for more than average dives. Also, i really dont know why other nations cant learn how to enter water without so much splashing. Its also a huge factor why China has so much advantage over other nations. While China did in fact sweep the golds (boringly), did you watch the 10m platform final? Tamai was only 3 points behind Cao after 4 dives, but then a disasterous 5th dive took him out of contention.
