As was the case with the 1st boxing qualifier, an extra day of competition has been added for the second qualifying tournament in Bangkok. Competition now scheduled to run between 24-May-2-Jun.

Current estimate is that more than 630 athletes will be registered to compete.

One of those is Amy Broadhurst. A former world champion with :IRL (at non Olympic weight). She was beaten by Rosie Eccles of GB in the European Games last year. She wasn't selected for Ireland in the first world qualifier where Grainne Walsh was narrowly defeated.  When she was told she wasn't to be selected for the second world qualifier, she sought a switch of allegiance.

She's dropped to the 60kg division (where Kellie Harrington qualified by winning the European games with Ireland last year) and will represent :GBR this time. her father is from England.  Her rivals for the GB spot are not happy with "the foreigner" coming in

The way that she tells the story is that her decision wasn't driven by not being selected for the qualifier but rather the fact that she was told she wasn't even going to be considered for selection. She had expected there to be internal assessment involving herself, Walsh and another boxer which ultimately didn't happen. If that is the case, can't help thinking that it was an avoidable situation.

Not to be facetious, but there was internal assessment and they chose Walsh. Shes pissed there wasn’t a second assessment but Broadhurst a) had a chance and lost to Eccles and b) was beaten by Walsh for the Irish spot. Walsh was similarly pissed last year when she beat Broadhurst in the Irish championships but they selected Broadhurst anyway.

Amy has been quite vocal about it, but Boxing Ireland can’t really reply to some of her comments without being accused of pettiness. They’ve decided to take the high road and allow her transfer through without objection.

The now replaced British 60kg fighters have claimed Broadhurst hasn’t made weight yet which adds another wrinkle.

So who is going to be selected by Ireland in category 66 kg?

Grainne Walshe. She beat out Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke earlier this year for the selection

  • 3 weeks later...

:IND Parveen Hooda loses the quota due to whereabouts failure. She'll serve a short ban and return next year after the case was heard earlier by ITA. Big mistake by the coaches here.

:IND will send Jasmine in this category for the final Olympic qualifiers
